Need some wire

Anyone know where I can get some red and black wire like you would find on at 5 or 6 cell lipo. I need to make an extension. The primary wire that I have is to stiff.

Nope tried them. the wire that is on the lipo's is probably 12g and very flexible.

Irish, you might try an auto supply store. Also, if it were me, I think I would get a larger gauge wire than you already have on the LiPo for an extension.

AutoZone or any automotive supply place should have it. Even Walmart, Target, K-Mart or a trailer supply/RV dealer should have some.

I just picked up some 14g wire and heat shrink at AutoZone last week.

Most of the wire that I seen at autozone and places like that were very stiff. CG-the wire size on the 4cell lipo is 12g.

Yeah, you're right. I hadn't thought about that, Irish.

Everyone take a look at one of your 4,5 or 6 cell lipos and you will see the kind of wire I am looking for.

RE: Need some wire

Irish,

I used to have a table for DC that worked with volts, amps, distance and AWG to figure the correct wire size to run in full scale aircraft. I want to think that it was in my A.C.41.13-1a (Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair) book I used when I got my A&P years ago.

Try looking through [link=http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAdvisoryCircular.nsf/0/99C827DB9BAAC81B86256B4500596C4E?OpenDocument]A.C. 41.13-1B Chg 1 online through the FAA[/link] and see if you can find anything in there. There's a lot of chapters and really good information in there, and it starts off with wooden aircraft and fabric covering. If the amps are not to high, you may be able to get away with 14g wire instead of 12.

I just glanced through the contents and it appears that Chapter 11 is the electrical section.

Hi goirish
If it were me, I would go to Lowe's, or an equivalent. Most home wire is solid copper, so is very stiff. What you want is stranded wire; the more strands there are, the easier it is to bend. At my Lowe's store I believe they sell some of the wire by the foot. An Electrical Supply store would be my next choice. Make certain it is copper.

The wire you are looking for is called MTW. Its soft & flexable. I use it to wire up electrical panels & its the cats meow!...Gene;) What you get at Lowes is THHN stranded, and too stiff for what you are looking for.

Is there a way to measure a wire's "gauge"?

Or Take a length of wire and strip off the insulation, wind 20 or so turns tightly on a nail or pencil. Measure the length covered by wire, divide by number of turns.

Or wire gauge tables

You want something like Deans Wet Noodle. Amazon, Tower, and other places have it. You can also just Google silicone flexible wire and find similar stuff. epbuddy.com sells what you're looking for in a "no name" version that works fine too. I don't believe you are going to find what you want at any local store. You're looking for something with a very high strand count in a flexible silicone sleeve.

your best bet is to go to an electrical supplier and you can buy 12ga 3 conductor cord by the foot, for replacing the cords on your electric tools or making an extension cord. you probably won't get it in red but it will be black, white and green. You will just have to strip the outer jacket to break out the conductors.

HK silicon wire is very good and the price is right. I have a couple of meters of every gauge in 3 colors. Shrink wrap is good to. Take some time one rainy Sunday and go thru it all, amazing what they carry. Do a search if your not sure where to look.
