4 Stroke Prop Nut
 

I was reading about prop nuts and was wondering, is this just the nut from the engine or a different product. I was thinking of not using a spinner on my Magnum .70 RFS. Would I just put on the nut and safety nut included or do I need a special product?

I got a safety nut with the little plastic locking piece in it at Ace Hardware.  Worked fine.

That will work. However, some of the Magnum cranks need the thickness of the spinner back plate for the prop washer/nut/jam to really grab the prop IF it is a low pitched prop. I've even had isues with a 6 pitch prop. The 4 pitch is gong to be a problem for sure. You could use the center hub of an aluminum spinner back plate for a spacer though.

The only other issue is betting a starter cond to fit over the nut combo. Some cups when reversed work just fine, Some don't. On one ocassion, I ended up with the engine turning over at a fast idle wth the cone still stuck on the nut. It pulled out of the cup on the starter. If you use a chicken stick for starting. this problem goes away though.

Hi!
No you don't need to use a safety nut when using a spinner (aluminum) or for that matter any time...
When using a spinner (Tru-Turn) you use a special nut with a hole up front that you screw the spinner bolt into.

I found those cone nuts work pretty good, especially if you need nose weight. The one I have on my DLE20 works with the starter cone, and I think the one for the 71 would be about the same size.

I like to use the Higley prop nuts when not using a spinner. It's a little cleaner look and will take a starter if need be. Notice the white spacer next to the thrust washer. This engine also needs a spacer so the first nut does not bottom out on the threads. The white you see is an old spinner back plate sanded down to size.

Higley has some weight options too. On a 4-stroke (like Dave's pic shows) you have two nuts - the spinner hub and the thin safety nut behind it. You can get a heavy hub or a light hub and you can get a heavy nut or a light nut. Their combined weight plus the weight of the prop can be used to balance a plane. Of course, for a 2-stroke you do not need the safety nut. For example, an APC prop may weight 1.9 oz. for a specific size while a Zinger wood prop of the same size may weigh .9 oz.

So true, the heavy and light weights from Higley can be differentiated by the color. Silver is light, gold is heavy.
