Hello fellow RCU members, just joined the other day and thought id introduce myself. Im a not newtothe R?Cscenebut Airplanes are and have always interested me, so to start my obsession I just ordered a DX6i with 6210 Rx for $170 shipped BNIB!Thought that was a great deal seeing as its BNF capable. Ill be purchasing Real Flight today and Alex (NOSB16ACRX) will be providing me with a trainer once im comfortable. Ive had a few minutes on Real Flight and to his suprise I took off, flew, and landed on my first try... Mind you, the landing wasnt the best and my circles could use plenty of work but im dedicated to putting in the time, MONEY,and patients it takes to become a decent 3d pilot!

I do however need to learn all of the terminology regarding planes, controls, parts, and so forth. I look forward to sharing my upcoming experiences with everyone be it success or failure lol.

Cheers!

Adam

Very good choice in TX for starting out. I have one and love it. I use it to BNF my Hobbyzone Super Cub (great starter plane) and my Hobbyzone Champ (also a good choice). Kudos on the RealFlight 6. I have the same sim and it has completely given me confidence to fly more advance airplanes and I have my first 4 channel warbird on order, a Parkzone T-28 Trojan PNP. When I bought my DX6i it came with one RX and two free park flier RXs. Great setup.

Welcome!  Sounds like you're off to a great start.  Most importantly you have Alex - a mentor and guide.  That will save much head, heart and wallet ache.

Thanks for the replies.... Im glad I have someone who devotes most of his free time to the sport. As for the DX6i, ive heard great things about it and look forward to using it on Real Flight that way ill have some experience flying with it before taking on the real thing.

Id like to purchase a decent 3d plane and have it ready before myskill level is. Im looking to go Nitro as im not a fan of electric so if anyone has a suggestion on a plane feel free to let me know.

Thanks again!

You've got time and the industry/technology will change before you're ready for a "decent" 3-D plane.  That should be your third or even forth plane.  A good 3-D plane needs the empennage to be about half control surface and the wing about 1/3 so.  That will bite you so hard your head will spin as a beginner.  You have to give just the tinyest control inputs for "routine" flight; and beginners tend to over-react and throw the sticks around hard.

A good 3-D plane may allow you to shed the wings at full throttle in level flight - especially if there is flutter in the ailerons.  I don't believe even Real Flight 6 allows you to solve flutter issues as a practice drill.

Soooo.  You'll want to talk to Alex and have him explain dual (or triple) rates.  As your thumbs become educated you can get by with exponential rates instead (at least I do).

Take a look at the Twist 40.  That will do about anything and won't break the bank.  Or your heart.

I was at the Rally of Giants last weekend and 1/3 scale Yak (I think) just barely kissed the ground with his tail.  30 seconds later it was in a hundred pieces - the elevator gave out after he had climbed to 150 feet and it did a ballistic faceplant.  Good 3-D models don't take abuse well.

Here's a link to the RCU 3D Flying forum. Just another place to ask your 3D recommendation question.

BTW- I have a Hanger 9 ShowTime 50. Check out the Hanger 9 website (Horizon Hobbies) for the specifics. Like the name states it's a .50 size plane. Mine flies beautifully with a Saito 82 4-stroke.

Welcome to the hobby.

Check this out: www.gettingairborne.com

There is a lot of good and useful information here for a new pilot.

I have the DX6i system and love it. Don't be intimidated by the menu system. Just get into the basics and go from there.

Key items to make sure you understand are reversing controls - if the throttle starts out with the stick all the way down and the control is full open, then it needs to be reversed.. stuff like that.

The other thing to see and understand is end point adjustments - where the controls are adjusted for maximum throw (be careful with this one) and exponential which can be - or + depending on manufacturer. Using this properly will set the sticks for a softer response at the beginning of the stick movement and gets progressively acute as you move the stick to the end of the travel. This allows for soft response of the aircraft for initial stick movement but full response with full response with full stick movement.

The rest of the stuff.. mixing, and so on, can wait for you to get up to speed with the transmitter and the hobby.

Good luck!!

CGr.

Seriously I cannot thank everyone enough for your replies, this forum is by far THEE best compared to many that I have been a part of. I will check into everyones suggestions asap. I understand what you mean by reversing controls, atleast I think I do and ill definitely be checking into the website you posted. Again, thanks everyone!

I havent but Alex fly's in Chase MD at a farm, its the clubs field but im not sure what its called. Actually I went for my first time yesterday, the landing strip is pretty small but as Alex and I agreed on itll make you a better pilot. Perhaps contacting Middle RIver Hobbies will lend the answer you need.

Are you new to flying?

BTW Everyone,

DX6i should be here today! and.....Picking up a Twist 60 for $300 RTF, it was Alex's old plane that he sold to a buddy. Alex said that it has $50 HiTech Digital servo's and I believe a 80 motor on it? Cant remember exacly what the motor is but while on our way home we discussed toning down the plane at first and slowly opening her up as my skills improve. Video's to come!

You probably want to make that Twist your 3rd. or 4th. airplane. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/thumbup.gif

I dunno. I owned a twist as a 2nd plane. With the throws reduced it is ok. However, the Twist is extremely fragile...especially right behind the canopy...almost all of them I have seen are broken there.

So...I would at least wait to fly it till you can land proficiently and not bounce down hard. It wont take very many hard landings. I think the Stick planes are the absolute best 2nd plane. I only bought a Twist because I had it recommended to me by a couple different people as a decent 2nd or 3rd plane...but not till I got my landings down to where I could grease in 10 of 10 every time.

Well Ive been spending boat load of time on the sim and have attained great confidence when landing but Iwill look at the rear of the canopy to see if indeed it is broken or on its way out. I hope its not ASfragile as you say, seems as though youre suggesting any type of crash will total it. Of course I plan on NEVERgoing down but if the saying is the same for planes as street bikes then, youll go down eventually, if you havent..... YOUWILL :)

Not new but still a beginner. fly mostly on my farm with 800' X 50' strip. have flown with RCMB in Parkton but like farm scene betterbetter than club scene. Have friends that love Westminster Aeromodlers which has two fields and a pond or lake.
Live in Northern Balto county but work in downtown and was looking for club that i might join for occassions when i have time in middle of afternoon when at work and can sneak away for an hour or so

If your mentor/guide is Alex from Middle River Hobbies, then the name of that club is "Sunday Flyers" off route 40 Near White Marsh. Ihave been there before. Great group of people. You picked up a fun hobby to get involved in. Good luck

Yeah its Alex from MRH, ive known him for about 12 years and hes always sucking in someone(me) into his hobbies lol. Looking into getting my first nitro plane but dont want to start off on a small scale, from what Ive seen the smaller the harder to fly....
