60 size ARF
 

What is a good 60 size ARF ...must be an ARF.. with a symmetrical or semisymmetrical airfoil that is a good 2nd plane. Have done loops rolls some inverted flight with my trainer but want to step up. Ihave read tons of previous posts on good 2nd planes, but am looking for a down and dirty answer or suggestion

I was always told when I was in training a sig 4-star 60 would be a good next step, but I acquired a super decathalon 40 kit from a co-worker that he never started for cheap so I guess that's my second bird. Haha

The 4Star60 makes a great flat-bottom low wing trainer as it has a ton of dihedral but it really needs a couple of wing bays removed to liven it  up. This statement will generate a ton of negative comments (I have a 4Star60 with a Saito 91 - great kit but we're talking ARFs).

The Escapade 60 would work. Nice flying plane and will do most basic manuvers. Good Luck, Dave

My vote... Get an Ultra Stick and fly the daylights out of it. Great second plane, easy to fly, and will do most stunts as your flying progresses.

My personalidea for a 60 sized plane would be an Ultra Stick 40 with a 60 on it. That is still my every day flyer. I built mine with the quad flap option, which is hugely entertaining.

How about a Great Planes Big Stick .60 with a 90 size 2-stroke or 4-stroke.

60 size Stick is a good choice

U Can Do is also worth considering just dial back the throws to begin with and remember you CAN break it in a power dive..

The Stick (doesn't matter which one) and the many derivatives (The Pulse is one, as is the Easy Sport) can't be beat for a second plane. It's as forgiving as your trainer, much better in the wind, and can be as wild as you want it to be based on how you set it up. I have the H9 Ultra Stick and started with a .61 on it. It was sporty and could do pretty much any maneuver I wanted, but it wouldn't do a huge 500 foot loop so I put a .90 on it. And when you advance to fancier or more demanding planes, you'll still want to pull out your trusty Stick from time to time and just burn holes in the sky, especially on the gusty 30 mph wind days.

Just thinkin' out loud - is there a true "shoulder wing" plane available? I asked a friend if the Stick was a shoulder wing and was told "nope" - wing's too high to be a true shoulder.

Actually it is a great flying plane, but I should explain myself first. I fly at 5000' so I need to power my planes a little more than the minimumengine requirement for them to fly well.The FX61 on my Ultra Stick 40 is modified with a Performance Specialties piston and cylinder, higher compression, larger carb, and a Jett muffler, all of which gives it a touch more power than a stock engine a sea level. It turns a 13x5 at 14,800 on the ground and is a draggy plane, so it really does not go very fast. I fly it at 1/2 throttle most of the time and it has unlimited verticle. This plane has great mannors and isvery easy to fly. I stand by my recommendation, this would be a great second plane. I have had this one for years; I always take something really fast to the field, but I am never without this plane.

I get it - just pullin' your chain. A friend has a Saito 115 on his SIG Somethin' Extra. Guess he wanted "somethin' extra".

You just can't beat anything that has the word stick in the name they are just great flyers. A .40 size with an os .70 four stroke has been my favorite for years. Just my .02

Big Stik .60 with an oversized engine.... years of fun. Rugged plane, easy to repair, loves the wind, long glides, easy landings, does most 3D manouvers, inexpensive...

What's not to like?

Oh, yeah, they are sort of ugly... until you own and fly one yourself!

I fly the Great Planes Big Stick 60 and it is a great flying airplane, Much better than the Ultra Stick 60 IMHO!

My initial thought was a Pulse XT as per the first reply to your question. While I have some time on heli's before getting a plane, I'm personally finding that my Yak54 at 30% on all throws and with a good amount of expo is proving to be a great 2nd plane (seriously!!).
While some will state I'm mad (your entitled to your opinion), it's light, has a really low wing loading, floats in for landings at stupid slow speed, and once tamed in re control surface throws and expo, is proving to be a really nice aircraft ..... and as the guy who did my initial test flight for me put it, "she fly's like a kitty cat"!!
It was an educated and thought out punt when I went this way, but as the true nature of the beast is a dual rate switch away as I expected it to be. and it's fair to say that I'll NEVER out grow this 2nd plane!

The real question is not which one is best. I see it as which one can you find. All the suggestions so far are very good indeed. 4-star, Tiger 60, Big Stick and the Escapade to name some. I have put a Escapade 60 together and set it up for a friend. I have a forty size escapade. Both fly good and are fun. The escapade is similar to a four star. Not as rugged. Maybe it is just me, but there seems to be less 60 size plane on the market. The 60 is the standard of all engines according to my old friend Larry Poesy (RIP). He and another friend, Louis Penrod (RIP) helped design the modern Enya 60 while stationed in Japan in the late fifties. They told me that the sixty is the engine of all glow engines and every other two stoke is just a modified 60. That may not may not be true. What I do know is the sixties I own and have owned have always been good and reliable engines.
I hope you find that perfect sixty size plane. You have been given good advice. I would say the Escapade or Stick.
