Trimsolvent. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
Hey. So this is going to be my first MAJOR rant. Bought a Twinstar, and decided to use trimsolvent to try to keep the trim attached. Didn't use anything on my Nexstar, and a good chunk of the trim fell off. I figured live and learn. Yes, I went over it with an iron. So I went out to my playpen, and got everything ready. Yes, I read the instructions on the bottle. Got everything cleaned off, and opened the bottle. My little shop is about 400 sq. ft. but the fumes that came off that bottle, would knock a Moose down at 1000 ft. Next, I went and grabbed one of my 1/2 masks, and a couple of P100 cartridges, which should handle a nuisance level of most solvents. WRONG. I could still smell the solvent through the mask. On top of that, the little bit that I did get done, looked like a hooker in a rainstorm. The black bled all over the rest of the colours. So I did get that cleaned up, and that was the end of the HOBBICO TRIMSOLVENT. Tomorrow, this S_ _ _ is going to be disposed of at my local dump, which does have an area for TOXIC substances. My God, some 16 year old kid, who doesn't know better, could go and buy this garbage thinking it would only do what he or she wanted. To stick down the trim on their plane. HOBBICO really needs to give their head a shake, selling a product like this. I still have a headache. UNBELIEVABLE, nowadays you can't say s_ _ _ ,but companys can still sell garbage like this. OK so I feel a little better now, but this crap is still going to the dump. I can live with the trim falling off, but I CANNOT live, and I don't think anyone should, with this crap. Idon't know anything about the trim solvent you are talking about, but Ido know that if you can smell it through your respirator, your respirator is leaking or you have the wrong cartridges in it. It either needs to be tightened, cleaned or replaced. I am surprised they are selling products like this nowadays. This product should come with safety sheets to warn of any dangers and show how it should be used and handled. Is this by any chance old stock that has been sitting for years?

I am sorry that you had a bad experience with Trim Solvent. I have used it with great success. You definitely need to use it in a well ventilated area. A little will go a long ways. I have used it for adding small trim pieces or for sealing trim edges. You have to use it sparingly. I also use it to clean up smearing of monokote when sealing the edges with a iron. It works great for that. |

Some people swear by it and some swear at it? I don't use it at all, I just go over the trim with my trim iron on high, just about 1/4 inch around all the trim and it is on there forever. I also iron over any seams so the covering doesn't lift.

FWIW, once a piece of trim has come off it won't ever stick again like it should. Castor residue gets in every seam of a glow plane and seeps under the covering, making it come unstuck. A really great cleaning job with denatured alcohol and an absorbent towel (not a paper towel) can get a new piece to stick, but if you want to reuse an old piece you'll be better off breaking out the CA and just gluing it on.

I have never used the stuff....I use acetone to seal edges...I stopped using any cleaner with ammonia and stopped lossing trim

Hey Gray Beard. When you go over the trim, with your trim iron, do you use a sock on it, or just the bare iron? I have gone over all the Monokote with my regular iron, and a sock, but I think I will go over the trim again. From the tech notes:
"Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Vapor is harmful and combustible. Contains cyclohexanone, naptha, and gamma bytrol acetone. Do not use or store near heat or flames. Use only in a well ventilated area. Avoid contact with eyes and prolonged contact with skin. If swallowed, give one or two glasses of water, and contact physician immediately." The Manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet is available upon request. The best way to use it is to put some onto a paper towel or cloth and lightly wipe the surface the trim is going to be put onto. Then lay the trim piece down. Too much solvent will dissolve the adhesive on MonoKote, and allow it to wipe off. It's best to not try to apply the trim solvent to the piece of trim for that reason. It is a very active solvent, and is intended for use with MonoKote. |

I'd make sure that the filters that you are using in your respirator are listed for organic vapors. You shouldn't smell anything. I use a 3M respirator with the organic filters and don't smell anything when I use solvents. I don't think it's fair to suggest that Hobbico stop selling trim solvent just because it stinks. Many of our best performing hobby supplies are solvent based and smell terrible, but nonetheless are the best product for the application. Fuel proof paint is one example. You just have to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. |

It has a strong smell. But I enjoy using it. I seal trim edges with an iron then use the solvent to clean what smears with the iron and then clean the cool iron with it. It is also good to clean off glue residue left from factory decals. But yes ventilate the area.:D

On new applications : dish soap and water and a balsa wood squeege ( soft balsa ) till all the water is out then let it sit for a good period ( overnight is good ) then seal all the edges with an iron , I use my trim iron on high . ENJOY !!! RED

My experience has been great with Monokote. Other covering have been good to very bad. (yes, I read the instructions)Microfilm the worst and ANY black color is a gamble. Acetone has worked great for cleanup. Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation!!!

I'm working with the coverite microfilm right now, I will agree with you 100%, total crap but no one had any mono or ultra in transparent at all.

In order to remove the color bleed after using trim solvent I use acetone. Acetone will remove the color without loosening the trim at all. But acetone also has a strong odor. I don't think acetone is as dangerous though.
I have had good luck using the trim solvent, including to seal down the trim on a Twinstar. But yes, it stinks and has health issues. Maybe best to use it outside or in your garage with the doors open. I moisten a Q-tip in trim solvent then run it along the edge. Enough solvent wicks into the edge to create a solid bond. Then put the Q-tip in the garbage outside your house. By the way, if you read the MSDS for methyl alcohol, the main ingredient in glow fuel, it is also bad stuff. |

+1. I did NOT have good luck with this stuff either. I have a brand new bottle of it. Tried it once. It looked like it melted my manokote. Same results as yours.

Most Clear nail polish is lacquer. Lacquer turns yellow or amber with time.
Best thing to do is to NOT use any cleaning agent that contains Amonia. And the color of the monokote is the adhesive. Frank |

First problem, the Twinstars had the worst covering ever. I ended up recovering mine after strips of trim started coming off in flight and even solvent or heat was no help. I have heard that the newest Twinstars have better covering and that is no longer a problem?
I do use "Q" tips with the solvent, a very little goes a long ways. It is great for cleaning up a heat iron or color smears from covering. |

Someone suggested onetime to spray the Twinstar with some clear cote. You can buy that in a rattle can.

Most clear isn't going to stick for long to the glossy monokote surface. Most planes will do fine if you go over all the seams with an iron set for sticking not shrinking. Most ARF's need to be reshrunk anyway when you get them so it's not exactly an extra step you have to do. A little sealer in places where a seam is facing the airflow (such as trim) is a good idea. Nail polish can be put on and then mostly wiped off and will still be there in the seam where you need it to be.

I just wet a q tip in acetone and go along the edges since I have started doing this I don't loose trim. Someone told me it worked and seems to for me... I guess it melts the edge a tad bit
