SIG Somethin' Extra
 

Hey all,:)
I was just wandering if the Somethin' Extra was a good #2 plane. I have already sorted the trainer and was thinking of getting a kit to buil while I learn to fly. I was thinking of putting a Magnum 46 XLS in (as the engine I was given is already been through three people) and a Futaba 6exa, or is the 6xas better for the $$?

You can't go far wrong with a SIG SE.

There are many threads here to look at. Just search for it and you will find a wealth of comments; almost all of them very favorable!

I don't know...perhaps a third plane. The 6xas is a much better radio for the $$. I just sold mine here on RCU. The Sig 4-star is a good choice for a second plane. I know a lot of guys that have gone this route. If you are dead set on the SE tone the throws waaaayyy down. This baby will do snap rolls faster than you can count em'.
The four star is pretty darn forgiving yet is a stable flyer for a first sport low wing.

Just like the previous thread mentioned, you can't go wrong w/ the Sig SE. I own one and I also have the Mag. 46XLS up front. The SE is a great performer and is very stable. The Mag has plenty of power, once tuned in. Try to make SE as light as possible and be careful w/ the CG and you'll get unlimited verticals. I'm just now experimenting a AFT CG a little at a time to perform 3D manuvers. Good luck I know like the combo.

If you're confident with your flying skills, and can perfom a few 'tricks' the SE will be a welcome addition. But you'll need to keep it on low rates for a while, as It can get hairy. And you'll be introduced to the world or 'tail draggers' as they have their own unique take off traits.

Most people graduate to the Sig 4 star line, then the SE. the 4 Star is just a little less 'airobatic' / more tame. I love them both! And they both build in a few evenings! The radio gear and engine can be swapped form one the other as your skills advance..

A friend of mine used the SE as his end plane and he loves it. It's very stable and easy to take off and land. As mentioned, he had the throws to a minimum at first.

I agree that the SE is a great plane, but I do not think this is a good choice for a second plane. I keep reading about people who are trying to move to fast. A good choice for a second plane would be either a Sig four star or a goldber tiger2. These planes are more stable than the SE and a little tamer, but still capable of some aerobatics. The SE would be a better choice for a 3rd or 4th plane in my opinion.

My wife surprised me one day with a Sig SE Kit. She had gone to the LHS and told the owner that I had started with the H9 Alpha and was wanting a kit (for my 2nd plane) to build and wanted to know what he would suggest. He suggested the Sig SE, so she bought it for me as a surprise. After my initial shock I began to set up shop and started to build this wonderful aircraft. When I finished the plane weighted 5.5lbs. The engine is an Evolution .46, Radio system is a JR 8103 with DS811's on flt controls and a hitec hs-311 on throttle. Flt control throws are mechanically maxed. I have set up dual rates in my 8103. Saturday (09-20-03) was it's maiden flight. I had a fellow club member do a preflight check on it after I had already done one. When He was satisfied he advanced the throttle slowly and she was the most prettiest sight that I have seen in a while. She only required a little down trim. After he landing, I went over every nut and bolt and re tightened. Then it was my turn, 5 flights later I am still having so much fun with her that I don't desire to stop, but I was getting low on battery power. So I said all of that to say this, If you want the SE for your 2nd plane then get it. They are fun to build and fun to fly...

I've seen quite a few shots of your plane in a few threads! She looks mighty fine!! Great build, eh?! Love the pilot!! :D

Can I ask what the significance is with "Sooner's"? With that pilot, I would have though ACME!!! :D:D:D

There's really no significance between the two, other than he was the only Pilot I could find to volunteer for the job. I guess you can say he decide to get some education so that he may be able to figure out a way of Catching that pesky Roadrunner!?!?

About the 6EXA vs 6XAS. I know the 6exa isn't PCM but it has far more mixes and stuff than the 6xas???
Oh, and I think i'll go for the 4 * 60 maybe as #2(excuse to buy another engine) and then se. Has anyone heard of the Bluenose? It's built from planes.
