Sane engine choice?
 

I am getting a Sig Kadet Senior as a trainer plane and planned to put an OS FS70 Ultimate in the plane, but it seems the 70 Ult is not going to be stocked until late Oct or sometime in Nov. Time to rethink the engine choice.

What I am now looking at is the OS FS91 II Surpass pumped. My concern is that this may be too much engine for the Kadet Senior.

Any advice, keeping in mind that I want to stay with a 4 stroke engine.

The Kadet Senior will fly well on a 50 sized 4C. OS, Magnum, and Saito all have 4C engines in this range. Put a 12X5 prop on it and have fun! I do beleive you'll have to move some radio gear forward if you get one of these lighter engines.... I flew a Kadet Senior last weekend that had a 46 2C on it and I never went over half throttle...

I am a huge fan of the OS 91 Surpass, but I haven't heard much about the pumped version. It WOULD be a bit much for the Sig, but then, you don't HAVE to fly it at full throttle, and there are MANY really good 90 size planes to move up to later. (90 4-stroke size is probably my favorite)

I built a Sig Kadet Senior and learned how to fly on it. Mine is powered by a TT G42. had to add about 4 ounces of nose weight. Very slow and forgiving flight. I did learn on it and still have it in pristine condition. It's lousy when taxiing in windy weather and kind of a handful in real windy conditions. Don't think a bigger motor would help any windy weather flying but, I wish it had something like a TT Pro 46 on it. What I think would really be perfect would be a strong 60. A 91 2stroke just sounds crazy, but a 91 4stroke might be ok. I'd come down and consider something like a 72 4stroke. Best bet is to figure what plane you'd use the motor in after the Kadet Senior. A wise freind told me that in the Kadet Senior, it doesn't matter what you put in it, its only going to fly so fast anyway and nothing more. Pick a winner and go with it. Very mild flying, but a blast just the same, even just puttering around the sky.

I would go with the O.S. 91 Surpass II. It's a great engine. Like MinnFlyer said, it will be a great choice for future 60-size planes. If you move down to a 70 or 72 4-stroke, they will make a great choice for future 40-size planes. Good luck!

Just dropped $1300+ on the radio, plane, engine, flight box, and misc gear.

Guess the choice is made and I did end up getting the 91 Surpass.

Great engine. Now I have one more suggestion. Get a Graupner 13.5 x 8 prop for it. Hobby Lobby carries them if your LHS doesn't. Here's a link:

IMHO, these props are unbeatable on 4-strokes.

I've built and flown three Kadet Seniors and put .60 2 strokes in all of them. Part of the reasoning for this is I fly at 5000' ASL. A .71 4 stroke would be adequate for almost any altitude. The .91 will not make a hot rod out of the thing but you should be prepared to add tail weight. With the exception of the P-51 not many aircraft can be improved by over-powering. You should also consider adding some shear webbing to all wing spars and vertical/horizontal bracing to the tail feathers. A conversion to taildragger status will increase the fun too.

This is your first plane???
If so not to be rude but going all the way from nothing to a four stroke is a big leap and you realy know what you have to be dealing with just my two cents

I just bought all the stuff I needed for my Sig LT 40 on Friday. My fiance about had a nervous breakdown because I spend $550 bucks! How in the heck did you manage to spend $1300? Wow, I thought I spent a lot, lol.
