Help finding airplane scale
I have a 63 inch wingspan P-47 Thunderbolt made by FMS and I can't find anything that would relate to what scale this plane is. Do any of you have any idea what scale this plane might be in terms of what scale pilot I need to buy for the cockpit? As always thanks for all your help.Thomas

RE: Help finding airplane scale
Look up the true wing span, convert that to inches, divide that by the number of inches of the span of your model!

Do any of you have any idea what scale this plane might be in terms of what scale pilot I need to buy for the cockpit? As always thanks for all your help.Thomas The P-47N while had the looks of a "clipped wing" it was actually longer than the others with a wingspan of 42', 6 & 13/16" with a length of 36' 1 and 3/4 " The "JUG" cockpit was quite roomy as compared to other fighters of the period. The pilot's head was close to the canopy top while the shoulders were barely below the canopy-fuse. line. Careful of "scale" commercial pilots. They are gennerally rather small for their advertised scale. I once admired a T-33 turbine model as it was extremely well done. The pilot figures were so out-of-scale, way too small, they degraded the entire project. Having some 1500 hours in that machine, as a student and later as an instructor pilot, I well remember that in the backseat, my shoulders and helmet had almost no room to move. (I am only 5'8") In the front seat there was a tad more room but not much. Many would-be pilots were disqualified in those USAF days because of height. If having to eject from a T-33/F-80 they would have to leave their knees on the windscreen. True reason! I estimate about 90% of the scale pilots in scale models are, in most models, way too small. Drop in the $ store and get a very cute female. Dress her "properly" and no one will ever even wonder about the pilot size. I could show you some pictures of my models, but some here don't seem to appreciate the real art of a beautiful female body!!! :D |

About an 8th scale if you do the math.
