Receiver Switch
 

I have an older JR radio model 8103 on .72 mhz and I have a second receiver with the radio. My local HS doesn't have JR radio stuff so I was wondering if a switch from Hi-Tech or Futaba would work. I know the radio has to use a JR charger, other chargers have reversed polarity but if you know if another brand of switch will work let me know. Thanks in advance.

The Hitec switch will work just fine.

Indeed both the hitec and Futaba switch will work in your JR receiver but if it is Futaba you will likely have to shave off the polarity flange on the side of the Futaba plug that goes to the receiver. The Hitec servo and switch plugs do not have the flange issue.

Thanks for the replies. I wish the guys at the HS shop would have told me this the other day when I was in there trying to buy a JR switch. It didn't occur to me to ask if they would interchange. I should have guessed since I am using hi-tec servos with the JR reciever in one of my planes now. And John I have shaved several Futaba plugs so they would work in other radios.

Getting a switch and battery will let me add a second plane to my old radio. I bought the JR off E-Bay for a good price and love the radio. This is the only JR I have ever had and once I figured out how to program it, it has been totally reliable. Never had a single glitch. It came with three analog servos and two JR digital servos and a second reciever that still had the antenna wire coiled up. The other receiver had been installed in a plane but never flown. I am about the last dinosaur flying the 72 band at the field. I am looking at 2.4 radios but am still confused on what to get.

It is getting more and more difficult to get accurate info particularly on older tech such as glow engines or older FM/AM/PCM radios from hobby shop folks but there are plenty of other sources such as right here or heck other older members of your club.


Don,t be shy about any questions you may have 2.4 system and when you do first start flying with 2.4 you will soon loose interest in those old JR's ;)

I am a dedicated Hitec user for some time now with three A9's and I think about 53 or 54 receivers. The Hitec system I suggest to most of my new students is the Eclipse 7Pro or if they want Futaba its the 7C I always recommend. Like the 7C the Hitec E7 Pro is not the entry level radio for either but these represent the best bang for the buck for new folks just starting or just getting their first 2.4 systems.

I would have replied sooner but this is the first time in a couple of days I have been able to log in. I had to try 5 times before internet explorer would allow it. I have no other problems with any other sites but this one. Really frustrating.

Roy's is the best stocked shop around. The guys who work there aren't problem solvers, so don't expect them to do any creative thinking like mentioning to a new pilot that the plugs on various switches can interchange. JT's is a good bit closer to you in west Fort Worth. It's a much smaller shop but they'll order anything for you if you call. I buy fuel and the odd piece of hardware or props there.

Hello Jester. I have been going to Roys for many years. I am not a new pilot. I have been flying R/C since 1979 and control line since back in 1970. I have been to JTs many times but not as much as I have been to Roys. My mother lives on the way to Roys so sometimes I pick her up and we go eat Chinese. So its worth the drive for me. I asked about the switch as an after thought while I was picking up the LT-25 kit. I should have done some research first. Making another trip to the HS is always fun for me. I wish Roy was still there.

Ah. So you should be answering my questions then! Normally I would be at the airfield, but my daughter is going to a classmate's birthday party tomrorrow afternoon. You aren't worried about the wind tomorrow? It's supposed to be just as bad as today. My wife got a wild hair that she needed a catamaran boat this week, and we flipped it backwards in Marine Creek lake this afternoon because of a too strong headwind. If you're planning to maiden a trainer in this stuff you're a braver man than I am.

Hi Jester. I do answer questions on occaision. I just don't know everything. Thats why I get up each morning because I learn something new each day.

When I posted about going to Thunderbird field I hadn't look at the forecast yet. So its blowing pretty good here in Burleson and we just had a light shower. Sunday will be nearly as bad. I sure want to fly my new plane. I may have to get my RC fix by going to the HS.

My uncle use to live in Saginaw and he fished in Marine Creek. I went with him a few times and my dad and I use to go there ever once in a while. Pretty little lake.

It is. I attempt to fish there sometimes, but I've never had much luck off the bank. I usually have my 5 year old with me, which means not a whole lot of walking around to the spots that people don't get to much. And yes, I just looked at the forecast and the wind is going to be bad tomorrow too. I may take a shot at going anyway after church. I have a Kaos and a big Extra 300 so the wind isn't such a big deal.

Hope you got to go fly today Jester. I went to JTs saturday and they had a JR brand switch in stock. So I got that and a couple of the Hi-Tec 485 servos. The smallest battery pack he had was a 2000ma. I didn't want one that big. They take too long to charge. I will swing by Roys and see if he has a 6-800 ma pack. Then I can put one more plane in the air.

I didn't go today. Wife had other plans and it was windy enough that I didn't feel too bad about losing the day. I'm surprised JT's didn't have a basic pack in stock. Of course, they don't maintain a whole lot of any kind of stock. I think mail order is really hurting them more than it is Roy's.

I remember when mail order first started and they did beat the prices at the local HS. That doesn't seem to be as true now as it once was. Most of the time I can go to Roys and get a better deal than at tower. And I can get it now, not a few days later. Plus I get to look at it first.

Yes, the shops are comparable to mail order. Sometimes they are cheaper even, which tells me that the mail order outlets are making way too much money or the local hobby shops are running on razor thin margins. I suspect it's the latter. Do you have other planes to fly that can handle the wind better than your Kadet?

Yes Jester I have two planes that will fly in higher winds. A GP Big Stik 40 and a scratch built Sweet Stik that came out just a little heavier than the plans called for but it still flies very well. I can't even tell its over weight. Heck, its a Stik. You know how well they fly.

I do. An overweight and overpowered Stik is about the best windy day airplane there ever was.

It looks like the forecast for the wind on the 4th is 5-10 mph. If thats the case I will be at Benbrook with the new plane. There is also a chance of rain so that may queer the deal.

The 4th is some kind of fun fly event. I don't think it requires a fee, and there may well be some free flying time for you to maiden the Kadet. Just be aware that if the weather is good the field will probably be busy and there will be some light competition going on. You'll be welcome there either way though.

Jester the plane is on charge. Winds still 5-10mph. I plan on being there. And I have always felt welcome. I am bringing the dues money to join the club too.

It's a great day to be flying. I wish I could go. We are having friends over this evening though, so I am on house cleaning and cooking duty today.
