Apprentice Buddy Box system

I only have the use of one hand, my left hand, so I must use a mode 1 radio. Problem is in the U.S. Folks generally use mode 2.

Can this work as a buddy box system: a DX5e mode2 as master with a DX6i mode 1 as slave?

My plane is a Apprentice.

Don't believe so. Both transmitters need to have the same channel/stick assignments or an action at the Slave will result in something unintended at the Master.

There are some flyers in the US who do fly mode 1, not many but they do exist. I belong to two clubs and I know of at least 1 flyer in each club who fly mode 1. Check with the club you're going to learn to fly at and see if there is a mode 1 flyer who will work with you. If you do find a mode 1 flyer to buddy box with you, he may have a TX to buddy cord you with, or you may have to buy a second DX5 or DX6 and a cord if his equipment wasn't compatible with yours. Start by Checking at your club.

When you say mode 1, may I assume you have aileron/elevator on the left stick? Also, you may be using a neck strap or tray? If so, you could switch your tx to mode 2, (if possible) and buddy box with someone using mode 2 (I have a much better method than the use of a buddy-box when teaching). You could go back to mode 1 once you get the hang of flying.

Check with radio South and last time I heard they were making the single stick TX. It's another option for you and very easy to use left or right handed.

Single stick is a great way to go.

I have buddy boxed people by using different modes on the master and slave. It worked fine.

Ken is right, buddy boxing will work fine crossing modes. When Ken and I started buddy boxing I had mode 1 and he had mode 2 .
As a left hand only person I fly Mode 3 and use a TX tray. I use my elbow to control the right stick Throttle and Rudder.

Use your left hand to control elevator and ailerons, Depends on the Airplane mix Ailerons with Rudder. ( trainer )
Mixing will also give you steering on the ground. Have mixing on a switch some airplanes Don't like mixing in the air but mix for steering on the ground .
Dbell I sent you a PM give me a call.
Now I buddy box people with my mode 3 and they are on mode 2
I can send you info and pictures how to make a Tx tray

You can see the Tx tray mode 3 buddy boxing mode 2.
