Different battery
 

Ok. Most electric planes that i have seen for sale on various web sites come with the recommendation for a Lipo battery. Can a different type of battery be substituted for the Lipo and if so do you have to change connectors? Thanks

Yes you can use different types of batteries.

As there is no industry standard for connectors it is likely that you will need to change.

However as lipos are cheap and have better power storage than the alternatives why would you change.

Maby because they can explode. I mean burn/catch fire.

Would a LIfe battery work, they have a deans plug??

Check these out, Im going to use these in all my planes,
2 still have nimh, but the other 2 have nothing.

I just dont like the risk factor that lipos have.

For transmitters, I'm firmly convinced that slow discharge NiMh such as Eneloops are far superior to LiPo's for the following reasons. First, you can charge them in place (no need to remove from transmitter to charge); second and probably most important is that when you forget to turn off that transmitter switch (and that will happen) you will not destroy the cells. Third, you can use a simple constant current charger and you won't have to worry about overcharging as long as you charge at 0.1C. The modern slow discharge NiMh's hold a charge nearly if not totally as good as a LiPo.

Thanks everyone. Yes explosion is the main reason to seek other types of batteries.

If the fire risk concerns you [ AND IT SHOULD ] remove them from the model/TX and charge them in an old cooking pot or ammo box.

That is what I do.

I have never heard of a LiPo exploding, burning....yes and rather furiously...but never exploding.

Ok when they burn it can be rather furious and dangerous.

I just prefer to avoid the risk.

Lipos are so much better than they used to be the fire risk is pretty minimal. As long as you don't keep trying to fly damaged ones and you charge them properly there is very little risk. Buy some lipo safety bags and you'll have nothing to worry about.
