Prop Washer Question
 

Hi all,

I'm trying to mount a spinner on a SuperTigre 45.

I've tried several spinners and with each one taking into account the spinner back plate there isn't enough of the prop shaft left to add the prop, prop washer and fully bolt on the retaining nut.

I can get the nut on about 50% - 60% of the way.

I'm not particularly happy with this arrangement.

As I've tried several spinners and they're all much of a muchness I'm considering either:

1. Dropping the prop washer altogether which will allow me to full torque the nut

2. Replacing the prop washer with a standard flat washer which is much thinner and will give me more prop shaft to work with

I really find this odd as I've had many of these engines before.

Thoughts?

Use a prop with a thinner hub?:confused:

I've tried three.

There is very little difference between three different brands but some which helps.

I've done it before. It works fine. If you have good friction between the prop and backplate, it really doesn't take that much torque to hold the prop on. If you're using a plastic backplate, cut a piece of open mesh sandcloth (the stuff you use for drywall or plumbing) to make a washer between the prop and backplate. it works so well you won't be able to make the prop slip even with the prop nut only hand tight.

A thinner washer works, you say?

If it's strong enough to keep from bending and it fits the drive shaft, use it.

If you have a spinner with a metal insert you can dispense with the washer.

Using a single thin washer with an all plastic spinner is not a great idea as it will dish. Two may work though.

The washer I'm talking about is the one which fits between the prop and the prop nut, rather than the black plate of the spinner.
