Modeltech Magic Electric

Hi Guys,
I haven't flown RC for 15 years...needed to re-register since I couldn't remember my password. I think there has been a lot of changes since those days. I just picked up a NOS ARF, Modeltech Magic. This is 3-3.5 lb plane with 52" wing span that will land at nearly walking speed. I want to convert it to electric and I am clueless about what I need. I was hoping that the fine gentlemen on this forum could give a tip regarding a lightweight motor, controller, and battery for this plane. I'm wanting slow flight and don't need high performance so the lighter the better. Very much appreciate any tips. Thanks

Scott

What engine was it originally designed for? Most manufacturers sell a glow equivalent that makes the conversion simple.

A 32 to 46 glow is recommended. I flew my old one with a 52. I was thinking of maybe the .25 Greatplanes Rimfire, or maybe even the .15. I've never designed an electric system before.

Why not one of the .40-.46 replacement motors? That would give you equivalent power and shouldn't make it too heavy. The Rimfire .46 would do fine and wouldn't be stressed with any reasonable prop you might pick. The Himax HC42 is another choice. It should do nicely with a 4 cell pack, probably a 4000-4500 mah and a 12x6 prop at just over 12k rpm when fully charged.

Hello,

a starting place for you to look as a replacement for a .46 engine in a sports airplane is a 600W motor driving a 10x6 to 11x6 prop at around 10 to12K rpm.
Battery to be chosen accordingly to the motor specs.
