Buzzing Servo
 

Hi I have a futaba s3001 that buzzes after i move it. Is this a problem?
And also I am needing new aileron servos for my gas plane it has a 48" wingspan. Which would you recommend. Thanks

A buzzing servo usually means it's hunting for the center position. It's not a serious deal but it will wear out your servos quicker. I would look for binding in the control surface or linkage as that is usually what causes that issue.
On what servos to get for your other plane, that's really a matter of preference. Since you're dealing with a smaller plane, heavy duty servos are not needed. I would start by looking at the following:

• S148 an analog standard servo with bushed shafts
• S3004 an analog standard servo with bearing mounted shafts
• S3151 a digital standard servo with bushed shafts
• S3152 a slightly more powerful version of the 3151

I just installed a throttle servo, Futaba 3004, and was getting buzzing at idle and full throttle. An adjustment of the end point setting, on my radio, cleared up the problem. A pushrod adjustment and servo setting may be needed for non computer radios. Check the pushrod for any binding while in motion. I run Futaba 3004 and they have been good servos.

Analog servos draw a lot more power when they are moving so buzzing drains your battery faster.

knowing what the servo is connected to would certainly help us help you. If on throttle, as suggested already make sure the servo is not trying to overdrive the travel of the carb. If on a control surface I would suggest disconnecting the linkage to see if the buzz continues with no linkage. If it does either move the servo to throttle or replace it. I would prefer the latter. Under zero load an analog servo should be silent. If the buzz stops without linkage, check to make sure the linkage/pushrod moves freely. You could have a hinge binding issue or if it's a metal pushrod that runs through a tube, the pushrod could be binding in the tube. Applying some car wax to the metal pushrod will help that situation.
