How to start engine with prop hub.

I'm running a prop hub on my TT91FS. The only problem is the starter cone on my electric stater is too big for the hub. I would rather not use a chicken chick as I'm too chicken to try it. lol

What are my options, do they sell narrow starter cones?

This may be something you have already tried, but I thought I would mention it just in case. Have you turned the cone from the starter around. Most of them have a large and small side to them.

Yeah, tried that, but didn't work. I guess I could hack at the hole a bit to make it larger and able to fit over the hub?

What I did to make my starter work on a prop hub is to flip the cone around so the smaller hole is out, then I did a little creative carving with a knife and made the hole a tapered hole that was a bit bigger than stock. That worked better, what worked best was getting rid of that blasted prop hub and putting a spinner on it. :D

They make a starter cone that works with both a regular spinner and a hub. Worked for me. Your LHS should have one.

I can't install a spinner on a AT-6 Texan. lol That'll be just wrong. I'm going over to visit my LHS tomorrow. I'll look at their starter inserts.

thanks

Just use the small hole...

You need to put a good amount of pressure on it (and make sure that your prop will swing as much as it can before it reaches the compression stroke!)

i wrapped a rubberband around the rubber part and squished it together a little and its worked for a long time. now it works on both hub and spinner

Who told you a spinner would not be OK on a T-6? Take a look at some pictures and kits. Harry Higley, Dubro and Sullivan all have prop nuts that look like a hydramatic apinner as used on T-6's.

I use my starter on a prop hub without any problems. Like several others have said, swap the cone around and use the small end. No carving required. Use more pressure than normal and MAKE SURE the hole is centered on the prob hub. Don't ask why I know it's important... :D

Hey Cruze:

You got good info above: Just wonderin what kinda starter you are using. If it is a Sullivan I reccomend getting one of thier acessory cups. I think mine is white. Has more grip than the stock one.

By the way I use Higley nuts or something similar unless I am forced to use a spinner. I find them safer and quite a bit more reliable than a spinner. I hope you get things sorted out.

I have the same problem and the hole on the other side did not work so I put a washer under the cone and used the big end it worked like a charm.

I'm using a Thunder Tiger starter. I took the advice posted and flipped around the starter cone. I enlarged the hole a bit with an exacto knife so it could fit snug on the hub. It's working just fine. Thanks,,
