Weighing a plane

What methods do people use other than the bathroom scale? I don't know how accurate mine is. Does somebody sell small spring scales?

Thanks

Kerry

You can get digital fishing scales at Wal-Mart, but my experience is they are not very accurate or repeatable. You might also find a baby scale at a garage sale. Unfortunately, good scales are not cheap.

50 pound digi fish scale. I have 3 of them and they all come up the same every time. I have also compared to other scales and they, once agian come out the same.

Depending on the size of the plane, you can just hang the plane off the muffler or for larger planes, make a sling out of rope and weigh it. Just subtract the weight of the sling to have an accurate weight.

I bought a digital electric (9 volt battery) scale at Walmart and it goes up to 5 pounds (80 oz.) and one push of a button converts to grams. It allows for tare (a hook, rope, whatever holding the plane) and has consistant accuracy. It is not expensive, but I've had it so long, I cannot remember the price. It is called a
GOOD COOK ELECTRONIC SCALE.

I guess I'm the cheap one here. Normally, my planes are in the 40 to 60 size range as these are the models I prefer to fly. Anyway I have a Post Office about 1/2 mile from the house. Soooo, after hours I take my plane in and use there digital postal scale. Only had a police officer question me one time and he was asking questions about the plane.

I bought a postal scale at an office supply store, such as Office Depot. These scales are reasonably priced and come in a number of different weight ranges, depending on what you need to weight. They are usually only accurate to 1/4oz or so, but for most work they are fine.

I have a fish scale and a 13 lb. precision scale I use to weigh small items (1 gram accuracy). They both agree within their resolutions.

try

if you want something more than a fish scale.

RE: Weighing a plane

Hey thanks guys. I think I'll look at fishing scales. I don't care if it's super accurate. If I can find one that's within a couple of ounces, that'll be a lot better than what I've got now. Obviously I'm not a fisherman or I'd have known about these.

Thanks again.
