what arf would you recamend i buy for doing 3d flying. i want to be able to learn how t o do advanced 3d flying. i was t hinking about the u can do. let me know what you think

I recommend the SPA3d. It's cheap and easy to build, and almost indestructable. Plans are available for free on the below site. I've included a picture of mine.

UCD would be a great choice. I would also build a spad3d just for fun.

dbcherry. i dont plan on flying this plane for quite some time as it is going to take me a while to build it and also for me to gain more flying time. i have been flying the simulator for many many months now i know they are not the same as real flying but i fell within a few months i will be ready to learn 3d. i jsut finished my kadet senior so i have to fly that first so 3d is on the back burner but i want to start building now. so i am ready in a couple of months

I didn't intend any offense. It's just that everyone's in such a hurry today.

LEARN the basics well before you try 3D! Get a couple "pattern" type aerobatic planes before you try moving to 3D. If you don't get good with the basics of aerobatics first, you will never get very good at 3D because you won't understand the principals behind the stick movements.

Just my opinion of course, you can do whatever you want.

I have noticed that to. One thing that my instructor was worried about was that I would want to take it to fast. There was another person who started taking lessons the same time that I did. I worked for a month, and worked on my banking, figure eights, flybys, takeoffs, rectangles, etc. I wanted them as near perfect as possible. This other guy, wanted to get into a 3D plane. He was atempting to do takeoffs on the third week. Atempting, that is. I have a plane in good condition right now, and am working towards my second (4*40). He is starting to build his second trainer, as he crashed the first. :(

That is what I think of everytime I read... "Just soloed, what should I get, a moderate 3D, or advanced 3D"

If you tone the rates down on 3D aircraft they are twice the airplane that the 4 star is. You can come in to land at a walking pace. There is nothing wrong with someone wanting a 3D airplane as their 2nd airplane. I promise you if you keep the rates minimal it is twice as stable as a four star. That way you can turn the rates up as you progress. The only down side is that these aircraft wont stand up to the abuse that a four star will. This comes from experience as I have flown every size four star with different motor combinations as well as a large majority of the 3D aircraft.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with wanting a 3D plane, as a second or third at all. I just don't think that it should be right away. When I said I was working toward a four*, I meant the end of next year.

P.S. I meant speed as in going to another plane sooner, not mph.

I wouldn't see anything wrong with diving into a Spa3d as a second plane at all...however...ONLY with the help of someone experienced with one. It's not hard to fly, but it's a completely different animal than a trainer. In the hands of someone not experienced in the set up and trimming out of one...at the least it could be a wild ride...at the worst could be dangerous. I don't want to ever see someone get hurt with one.

To all those who recommend getting a 3-D plane (With the exception of a SPAD) I only have one question:

How many of you are willing to buy him his THIRD plane after he totals it his first day out?

Remember two things when giving advice:

1) You KNOW how to fly. He only just soloed.

2) You know YOUR skills and aptitude. Do you know his?

Can you imagine a professional race car driver telling someone who just got their learners permit to hop into an Indy Racer and take it for a spin? (It's ok, just don't go over 100 MPH and you'll be fine!)

If he is ready for a four star then he will do fine with a UCD toned down. Have you ever flown a UCD? If the rates arnt set up high this thing is as tame as a kitten. Keep in mind that he is going to be logging flights on his trainer the whole time he is putting the UCD together. There is nothing wrong with buying an airplane and sticking it in the corner until you are ready for it. However I do not recommend attempting 3D until he is comfy recovering the airplane in any situation.
