biplane ? sig liberty
 

I was at a shop today and the owner was telling me about a bi-plane (I think he said it was a sig liberty) anyone heard of this plane .do you know of anyone that has one? I'm looking for a bi-plane to build this winter Iam considering a Balsa USA phaeton II or Phaeton 90 or Possibly a SIG Hogg bip any commments[8D]

The last time I saw a Sig Liberty, it was a "Builders Kit".

Unless it's been updated (Or unless you LIKE Builder's Kits), I would suggest going with the Hog Bipe instead.

thanks for the reply,ive only put together one plane an ARF but I would like to try building one from a kit. one thats not too hard. but it has to fly good when I'm done.Nothing too radical.[8D]

I have a skybolt... I love it You can buy the kit off of ebay for a good deal.. They are not to bad to put together either and I love the way it flies...

If all you have built is a ARF then I also would say stay away from the Liberty Sport as it's a lot of work. The Hog Bipe would be much better and is a great flyer with a .90 4 stroker up front.

GrnBrt is absolutely right! The Liberty Sport is NOT the first kit to build. IMHO, until you have learned to set incedence(s), a BIPE should not be a first timer.

The Astro Hog, would be a good learner. Then, when you have three or four kits in your hanger;
build a Hog Bipe.

Then when you feel more at ease with your building techniques, you could try the Liberty Sport.

Believe me when I first opened up the Liberty Sport box @ 20 years ago, I almost made a big mistake, but a friend bought it instead. I could never have built that kit by myself then. But now it would be more fun, as I am retired, and have lots of time to do nothing but build!

My father purchased a SIG, Liberty Sport bi-plane kit about 12 years ago in Texas. With all due respect to my father, his RC building techniques leave much to be desired. A while ago I inherited the semi-constructed kit and I'd have to say that I'm (re?)-building (completing?) it. I look at the project as a learning experience (first BIPE). So far I've re-built both wings and as I speak have dis-assembled the fuselage back to the box (former) framing. An incidence meter (or two) is a great help. I have learned a LOT building this model and I'm sure that my 2nd BIPE will benifit a great deal from these learned, skills. Eventually, I'll build my dream ship, Fokker DR1 or the, Sopwith Triplane. Isn't this, RC UNIVERSE, greaaaaaaaaaat?

The last time I checked a couple of weeks ago Sig didn't even list the Liberty Sport. I kinda wanted one too. Let me know if you find it.

Yeh, its not available anymore, but someone may have one lying around somewhere,you never know.[8D] I've learned alot from the research i've done. as cool as bipes are I think I've decided to hold off a while and look for a more appropriate project for #2[8D]

Most will tell you to not go to a Bipe for your second plane I bought a pre built GP Ultimate 40 and put my OS 46LA off my Modified Avistar.(.I removed Dihedrial and went to dual servos)....The BIPE flies great..I have a dozen flights and just love the plane...Plane lands smoother than the Avistar..and had no trouble adapting to a tail dragger..

I also got a built GP Ultimate 40 from a friend on a trade deal. I put a OS 46 FX in it and I love it. This is one great flying plane. I have flown many tail draggers so it was easy for me to fly. They fly great and look like a great kit to build. I would build another one in a heart beat.

EBAY, I just bought one form a guy in Ca. I paid 100.00 for a complete kit. and as of 11/29/03 there is another one on there. I have only built 5 planes and I am feeling a little apprehensive... However, I think with time and patience this will be fine. Considering my first build was a .60 TF gold Spitfire... I put the horse before the cart and the Spit actually sat for sometime before she was actually put into action. She flew wonderful....

I built one years ago. It is a very hard kit to build. I wouldn't recommend it. There are a lot of better biplanes on the market. That kit was a huge pain in the butt to build.

Here is a picture of my GP ultimate bipe and my Lazy ace bipe. I did not build either one of these planes but got them on a trade deal. My flying buddy has built a liberty sport and he does not recommend this as a first build. I would stick with an ARF kit there are a few out there. You can also look at the market place and might find one that someone is selling. I don't like to build planes and would rather get one already built or as an ARF. I am getting ready to replace the 46FX on my ultimate to a Saito 72 4 stroke so that I can start doing some 3D stuff with it.

The Sig Liberty Sport is a beautiful kit. They don't make it any more and if you can get your hands on one I suggest you buy it. But as has been said, don't build it yet. Put it on the shelf and make it your 5th kit or later. You'll love it when you have the skill to build it, but if you wait to acquire one you may never find it.

You have gotten tons of good advice here. I would like to add something. Do you know someone who is a very good builder? Most guys who like to build would love to help someone learn to build. I am one of those kinda guys. I love to build and help other people whenever I can. Maybe the fellow you get in touch with can help you. Aske the guy in your hobby shop if he will help! I would say with the proper help a Hog Bipe should be within the realms of possibility. I agree that the Sig Liberty would be real rough for a first build.
