RE: What is a SPAD?
SPAD stands for Simple Plastic Airplane Design. They are basically airplanes that are made of coroplast, and other cheap materials. There are many different designs from trainers to warbirds to 3D planes. The biggest plus of a SPAD is that they are harder to damage than a balsa plane.

Oh BOY, do I want to comment here! :D
Just kidding. Coroplast airplanes take a severe beating in some of the forums around here. But they obviously have some benefits, (cheap to build, durable) because many people love them, and some fly SPAD's exclusively. Personally, I have no interest in building or flying one. But that's one of the reasons this hobby is fun. There's room for everyone, and a hundred ways to go. ;) Dennis- |
RE: What is a SPAD?
SPAD are simply airplanes built out of another material, in this case plastic. The coroplast, or plastic, is just another of many materials utilized by modelers (balsa, fiberglass, carbon fiber, kevlar, plastic. etc...).

RE: What is a SPAD?
SPAD does stand for Simple Plastic Airplane Design. In the SPAD forum they have asked this same question and the conclusion was that a SPAD didnt even really have to be made of plastic. It really means a cheap, quick, made out of stuff you can find laying around, and REALLY durable.
