John:

Try the Hobbico Avistar Mk II 40 size w/ TT-46 Pro
I've trained several pilots with this one.
Or in the 60 size the Hobbistar Mk II 60

This is a very popular trainer at our filed. There are like four or five of them. Easy to fly and you don't grow out of them as fast as you would a standard flat bottom wing trainer.

They come as a great combo ARF kit (radio, chargers, plane, servos, etc.!)

Here is mine...

That looks like an Avistar. I have a Ultra Stick 40 plus and I am looking for another plane.

I will stop by my hobby shop and add one to my hanger.

Cessna trainer??!?

I don't think shuohan has tried instructing anybody to fly or he wouldn't be giving the advise to buy a Cessna. Cessnas make ok full size trainers but do not make very good RC trainers. 2nd type planes like Avistars work ok for some new flyers but are too frisky and sensitive for others. If you really want to be sure that you will make it to solo then buy a Sig LT40. It comes in kit or ARF. I have taught 8 year olds how to fly on an LT40.

Hi guys... that's really weird. I was just looking through this post and noticed that I had posted something. For the record I did not post "i think a cessna 172 is an excellent trainer my friend". I think it was one of my crazy friends (I keep it so I'm always logged in). Sorry for the trouble :D

Thanks for the input. I will purchase a Cessna 172 and a SIG LT40 to add to my hanger this weekend.

I already have two planes and enjoy building as well as flying. I haven't gotten into sports and aerobatic planes yet since I am having to much fun just getting planes up and down without major problems.

I have had 1 minor crash (a nose over) which caused a lot of scraping and poked a hole in the wing as well as a broken the propeller. I took it into the hanger and recovered the wings that night , replace the prop and was back in the air the next day.

I do have a few more complex planes (both kits) from GP; the first is a 60 size J3 Cub and a Super SkyBolt bi-plane. I will start building them some time in August after I purchase the engines and Futaba flight packs. I know that I have not developed the skills yet to fly the Skybolt, but I am going to build it for next year when I feel more comfortable flying.

That is why I am looking for more plane, each has it own characteristics when they fly and I need to round myself as a RC pilot before I take the plunge into the more expensive planes.

I watched a guy on Sunday with a GP Pitts, it was beautiful. He just finished assembling it and this was his second flight on the plane and his 7th month as a RC pilot. Well the plane went right into a tree pulling up from a dive. He was inducted into the TREE HALL OF FAME that afternoon by the club. The planes suffered minor damage, but I think his pride was hurt more. Over anxious to fly the really sharp and cool looking planes, I think

Thanks again

planes not built...

Shuohan, maybe you should consider what happened with your friends posting a lesson in computer security! The post wasnb't serious this time, but they could have just as easily posted something rude and inappropriate that would have got you banned from the forum!
John, Its too bad that you don't have any nice sport planes. It sounds like you are ready for them. The Cub and the Skybolt are harder to fly than say a Sig Midstar and not as much fun, the Skybolt may be fun. I flew a Cub and was disappointed. A Cub doesn't like to fly fast, doesn't like aerobatics and protests while trying to fly inverted. The landings need some positive speed or it will suddenly nose in. Not my kind of plane. My Hawker Sea Fury is a breeze to fly compared to this. I think that you may enjoy building them more than flying them. :D

I will look into some sports this weekend. I really enjoy talking to others about their planes and I need to give SIG a closer look. I had a chance to watch a guy purchase a GB kit and I was empressed with the instructions that were enclosed.

I will check out SIG first thing Saturday morning. when I go to a hobby shop that another member here suggest.

I will let you know what I get. The next big plunge for me might be changing engines types from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. I am an OS man and might switch over SIATO.

Sig planes

If you are going to check out Sig planes, maybe have a look at the Midstar. Its an inexpensive Midwing that flys like a low wing. It will scream with a 46 and then slow down and land like a trainer when you want to catch your breath! Very fun planes that can do akmost everything. One of these won all my Funfly events including beating out a 4* and an Easysport in the Limbo contest. I only have OS 2 strokes but everyone at our club that has a Saito loves it. Its one of those engines that runs great right out of the box! :D

Seeing as how someone mentioned Sport planes. I have a GP Super Sportster MKII that I am 80% finished with and I have never flown one. So - I have to ask.. how do the GP SSMKII's perform? IS this plane considered a decent (or entry level) 'sport' plane?

Thanks for the feedback, I just picked up a SIG this mornig, broke open the box and started putting it together. I too am a 2 stoke guy with OS as my main manufacturer. I do have a MDS in the stable, but I am not impressed with the power.

I will keep you posted on my flight progres.

TRP, Sportster

The Super Sporter is a terrific flying sport plane. I consider it a 3d type plane and is listed as "This is a good kit for someone who has flown low wing aircraft safely." from the Tower Hobbies site. Its fairly hot for a second plane but if you keep the ailerons set on the low rates, it shouldn't give you too much trouble. Keep the speed up on the landings, works much better. Other than that. the plane is an all around wonderful plane. The only thing I don't like is the short wingspan. I like to have at least a 60" wingspan for low wing planes.

Thanks for the info.

I am almost done with it. I have to mount the servos, the tank and install the motor. I am not sure if I should use the ball and cup method for the throttle linkage of if I should use a clevis. I was told to try and avoid metal to metal contact on the throttle linkage because the vibration from the motor might cause glitching. I also need some servo horns... not the round disk type that came with my Futaba - or does it matter?

I pickup two more planes a Tower hobbies ARF trainer and a Hobbico Avistar. Got both together and in the air.

Had my first crach, nothing major, just broke the prop and a hole in the wing. Have about 4 hours of flight time now and loving it.

Well back to the shop, I am salvaging some other OLDER planes I bought here from RC universe members.
