My decision on what trainer I am getting ! ! ! !

Thanks for the great advice Wings and Capio as well as the rest of the people here at RCU UNIVERSE!. Beleieve

me I have been doing my work on deciding which trainer to buy. I have read many articles on many trainers

from the avistar, LT-40 to the nexSTAR. I made my decision and in a few days I will be buying my first

trainer.....the Hobbico nexSTAR trainer. I love all the features it comes with from garentee success flight,

warantee if your with an instructer, self stabalizing capab., the flight simulator, and the radio and engine

can be used in my next plane. I like the ability to be able to lower the Active flight stabilization untill

its not used anymore, I also have the ability to remove the speedbreak training flaps to give it a little

more zip. Of course lowering the active flight stab. and removing the speedbreaks wont be for a couple of

months. I am getting the plane and the basic field equip and fuel for around 440 minus the small amount for

lessons and joining AMA so thats not too bad at all. I cant wait till I can start on my Sig Rascal....but I

gotta take it slow and easy. Ill be flying solo soon hopefully!

Again with the "the small amount for lessons". Is this the $25 per hour you mentioned in another thread? Just where are you getting your flight instructions, and why are they charging you?

Good choice on the trainer by the way.

Cherry, This $25 dollars an hour is from a hobby shop owner near my house, hes a cert. trainer with AMA. I know I could probaly wait a couple weeks untill I get my AMA membership and have someone from my local club teach me but I dont want to wait that long, so I am gonna do 2 hours with the guy from the hobby shop and then all followup training with my local club that I will be joining. I have to wait untill I am a member of AMA untill I can join thier club and this will take a few weeks. Make a little more sense now?

Thanks for all the encouragemnt everyone, might be going today to go pick up the plane and basic field equip, if so I'll mess around with the flight simulator before I start building it at home. R/C flying definitly has me hooked for life ! I am so eager to learn more...great hobby !

It does not take a few weeks to get signed up with the AMA and a club. You can sign up for AMA on line, get a print out of your Email registration (usually the next day). Most clubs will accept this while waiting for your membership card. Give your money and your club application to the club treasurer and you are good to go. Also most GOOD clubs will let you fly with an instructor on a buddy box while all of the above is taking place. If the local hobby shop owner is an "AMA cerified instructor" then he knows that the AMA does not allow you to charge for flight instruction. Find a different hobby shop and locate your local club. You wont have to wait to fly

I'd becarefull some of these LHS's make their leavings by fleecing newbies. If you are buying the gear from him I would require the 2 hours for free. Otherwise shop on line save the money and go to the club for free lessons.

TTark is right if you Sign up on Line you can get a confirmation in a day.

TTARK is right, you could get signed up immediately online and get ALL THE FREE HOURS that you want at the local club.
Not trying to cut the bussiness on that guy but you could benefit from the help of many individuals at the club instead of just him.

Thanks for the information about online reg. I will be doing that shortly. The reason I am getting lessons with this guy is because he helped me find my local club, suggest planes, told me all the information that I needed to know to get started and told me I could get lessons with him or get them with my club. I decided to get them with him because he helped me out a lot and seems like a nice guy. He even suggested getting the lessons for free but I insisted from him because he helped me out a bit.

snowwave83,
All of the help you mention that you got from the LHS guy are things that any of us will give you for free. That is the normal attitude at all of the flying fields I have flown at. Anyone willing to take $25 an hour from a student to learn to fly R/C airplanes borders on being a shyster.
But as the saying goes, it's your money...;)

About the AMA sign up.

I was at work when I signed up. I faxed the form to them with my credit card number on it (not the MOST secure thing, but I think it was ok) and by five o'clock I received the confirmation number from them over the fax. But, if you fax it be careful. I was ready to go out the door when I noticed the fax from them, and the fax they sent back had my CC number on it. That erked me. Good thing I caught it.

But I got my membership within a couple hours.

And I tend to agree with those guys. It is the LHS guys job to help and be kind. That is how he makes money, kinda like a salesman. It is expected that he be nice and help because it is because of you that he gets paid. So I agree, I wouldn't pay him a dime if you are spending that much money with him.

Again, it is your choice and good luck!

I did not buy my plane from him, I bought my nexSTAR from a hobby shop near me for around 358. I might just get lessons for free from my local club.

If you're an average learner you can pick up RC flying in 10 to 20 flying sessions. The two $25 per hour sessions you "buy" from this guy won't even get you to your first take off or landing.

I'm not sure why you want so badly to waste your money, but I'm not going to chase you with my advice anymore. ;)

Good luck with it, no matter how you choose,

Give the guy a break, he already mentioned that the LHS helped him quite a bit and offered to help him fly for free. Its his decision however he decides to be grateful. We are here to give advice not to put someone down for his actions.....geez.[sm=rolleyes.gif]

Guy do what you want, but if there is a club close by you can get in with and AMA membership for about $150 and get $1000 worth of lesson for free in the 1st WEEK!,,,, plus all of the tips and tricks you can stand to sit and listen to from all the guys in the club. AMA members do NOT charge each other for help. Find the nearest club and join up. Its usually $50-$80 for a club membership and $58 for AMA. RC guys where I come from seem to pride themselves in the fact that they enjoy helping fellow members as much as possible for no charge.

I decided to go with the lessons with the hobbyshop owner, as well as joining the AMA and my local club so the first 2 lessons I will pay for and I will get to fly a few days sooner as well as have every flight after that with a trainer for free.

I bought mine on Friday, so all I've done so far is crashed the simulator a lot :) Once I stop crashing the simulator, I'll be going out to the nearest flying field with some local AMA members for some buddy training. My one complaint so far is that the (simulated) plane does not steer straight when launching off the runway. I can't tell whether this is part of the simulation, and I should trim the rudder, or if it's just the way it is.

snowwave83 11-24-2003 03:29 PM

RE: My decision on what trainer I am getting ! ! ! !

I have the same problem, probaly something with the simulator. If it something with our radios our instructers will pick it up and fix it so no worries. Dont forget to change the weather, if you dont your flying with no wind at all and thats not realistic, I can handle the simulator (land and take off) with max of 10mph winds with gusts of 12 but its like a 50 50 chance ill crash. SO far the simulator is very useful. Your comments?

RE: My decision on what trainer I am getting ! ! ! !

For you newbies, almost ALL R/C models pull to the left on takeoff. It's called the "torque" effect by most people, even though the reasons are more complex than that. You have to apply some right rudder to get the model to steer straight. The Active Flight Stabilization System (r) won't keep that from happening.

The simulator just behaves like the actual model does.
