Wing Seating Tape ??
 

Hi,

Just a quick question !!!!! Does everyone use wing seating tape on the planes ?? and do you recommened using it ?

As most of the guys at the field do and im just wondering is it one of those things that should be mentioned in the building instructions but never is ?

I'm building a Great Planes PT-40 right now, and the instructions have infact called for using wing seating tape. I would think, that even if your instructions didn't specificly say to use it, you should. Having the fuse balsa (albeit covered) rubbing bear on your wing just seems evil. Besides probable slippage of the wing.

The tape is probably and all around good idea. If you don't have some, you can get it, and everything you need, at www.towerhobbies.com . I've delt with them for getting all of those little parts and most of my tools for making this kit. They missed something in my order (a trim sealing iron), but the instant i called them they had it out the door and on its way to my place. And they even let me keep the box of #64 rubber bands that came with my order by mistake :D.

Good luck and no matter how frustrating things get, remember that it's a hobby and you're supposed to be having fun with it :) (has had to chant (dont get pissed, it's just a hobby, don't get pissed [sm=lol.gif] ......... by pure ignorance i screwed up my radio system royaly [&:] )

I used it on my trainer, but in eight years, and probably 25 planes, have never used it again. ;)

It probably IS a good idea for many planes, but some of the better ARF's and most kits have a real nice wing to saddle fit, and adding tape would make it worse. Besides, when the fit is good, and the wing is mounted solidly, you don't get any wear.

As a newbie to this hobby as with any you all have 1,000 little questions you need answering and this site/forum has been great

Some of us use a little silicone sealant in there. When you are done covering the model just add the silicone to the wing saddle, put some plastic over it then install the wing and let it squirt out from the sides. Let it sit for 24 hrs and trim the excess. Now you have a custom seal for the wing.

Aw Shucks guys.... Now I'm blushing. [sm=redface.gif] And DragonHeart, a simple thank you like that makes it all more than worthwhile.

I'm only trying to give back some of the fun and satisfaction this hobby has given me. I know how much my simple answers can mean to someone who doesn't yet know, because I was there about 8 years ago.

And Mike, if anyone helps make this a great place, it's you! :D

Wing seating tape loses it after a while. A better way to go is to use silicone sealant or epoxy and micro-balloons.

Let me add $0.02... the real reasons for wing seating tape:

1. If the wing saddle is vulnerable to exhaust oil from the engine, then use seating tape to minimise the amount of oil that goes into the fuselage.
2. If the wing is mounted using elastic bands, there are a whole lot of reasons for cusioning the wing saddle a little bit... BUT, I have found that the most practical reason for the tape is so that you always put the wing on in exactly the same place every time. Put the tape on the WING, not the SADDLE. Measure it up carefully so that the wing is seated exactly in the middle. Add the elastic bands. Let it sit for a few moments. The indentation in the tape now serves as a permanent guide to future wing installation! With dowel/bolt wings, this is never a problem.
