prop jets - how are they?
 

was thinking about trying a prop jet but when trying to find some there was the great planes patriot 40 and the lanier f-4 phantom. Are there any others.. and turbine or inducted fan is a little out of my pocket book range.
found an f-15 eage and f-14 tomcat but both are discontinued by GreatPlanes..
is this something to really look into?
how are they at flying characteristics?
any input is greatly appreciated

The patriot is amazing, you can expect speeds of 120 mph with good engine prop combinations. Any of the other ones look really nice in the air but are relatively slow due to the amount of drag they create.

I have the great Planes F-4 Phatom kit. I plan on building it this winter. Anyone know of any problems I can correct durring the building?.

I was wondering why Great Planes discontinued this kit.

Great planes has discontinued a lot of kits for various reasons. The most common one is simply poor sales.

The Spitfire 40 kit is a prime example. Kit is just fine, for spitfires, it is a very good flier. Problem is that GP customers typically want to fly American planes, and the spitfire just does not generate the sales that the P-51 does... etc.

For what it's worth, GP has sometimes re-run previously discontinued kits, indicating that there is nothing wrong with the kit as such.

The problem is knowing whether the kit was discontinued because of poor sales, or poor quality.

I have been led to believe that my yet-to-be-built Spitfire 40 was discontinued because pf poor sales ....

Actually the F-4 is available again. The first time I built one I found two problems. The top drawing and the side drawing of the ailerons do not agree, I think they were off 1/8 of an inch. Secondly you cannot install the ailerons as draw on the top view. The inboard side is parallel to the fuselage, and not perpendicular to the T.E. You have to figure some way to slide the aileron inboard to make it fit.

That is a pitty. we have had a few GP F-14s at teh feild, and they are pretty sleek, and fast!

I guess they're discontinued becasue af teh ARF popularity, and yeah, the sales of kits in general...

Again a pity, that these compoanies discontinue kits because it really is cheaper to mass produce ARFs in a far away land...

I have the GP F-15 with an o.s. 46fx up front. It's a nice plane, and moves right along at about 70 mph. If you like jet looks, then this is a good plane. It is a fun plane to fly if you like looking at a jet. But it is not much of an aerobat. It will do loops and rolls nicely though. It likes to fly fast. Wish I had a slightly bigger engine on mine. I fly off grass so only have an 11x6 prop on her. Had a 10x7 which flew much faster, but had trouble getting off the ground. with the 11x6, She gets off the ground much easier, but at a cost of some top end speed.

Rumva, I think the F-15 is probably the most gentle prop-jet that you can find.....although I've heard that the Sig Kougar is nice too......oh, and Cermark makes an ARF jet also....

by the way....I just so happen to have a Great Planes kit New in the Box that I might consider parting with.... :D

Check out AK Models,hes got both the Mig-29 and a SU-27,both pretty nice looking planes,he has pictures on his website of the planes under construction as well,pretty good price as well.there both lazer cut kits.

I've seen a video of the AK Models SU-27 flying....seems like a nice plane too!

I don't like the tail of the GP F-15. It's a box with round decals...

Cermark's F-16 looks pretty neat.
