CA Hing Problem
 

AGGGGH!!!!! i have a problem, and it is the first time it has happened to me, but I know it has happened to someone.

I was ca'ing my aliron on to the wing and it moved and I have a big gap. so I cut the hings immediately and tried to debond the hinges. Well, what can I say but DUH!!!!!! IS there an relatively easy way the remove the old hinges. This is on a new ARF and my first pattern type plane. and So far everything has been perfert, even the other alieron went on
perfect. I CANT believe this happened.


Well if you are going to put planes together and fly em, your gonna have good days and bad days!!!!!!!......Today has been a bad day!!!!!

My idea's are using a dremell cutting disk and carefully cut down the slot, hopefully removing the hinge material and not
the balsa

I have heard you just seal them off and make new slots 1 1/2 inch away.....sigh...

I have a dubron hinge slotting set, so I an make new hinge points........

Just move them over and use new balsa.

Move them. It'll be impossible to get the old hinges out, and the wood around them is already saturated with CA, so new ones wouldn't hold well anyway.

i think they mean cut new slots next to the old slots dennis....you will be better off just leavin the old ones there..just trim them off [&:]......we all do these things...hmm....i remember deciding to install my rudder one eve for my last act and the next day i went out and it dawned on me that the elev. was one piece (not 2)...doh. i ended up cutting off the higes on rudder and reslotting.:)

Go to the local hobby shop and buy a pack of new CA hinges. Cut new slots and re CA- glue the new hinges.

Just to clarify what several have tried to say:

Run a razor down the gap to cut the hinges. Trim them off flush with the TE of the wing, and the LE of the aileron. Cut new slots next to the old ones, and install new hinges.

Don't use a Dremal tool to cut new holes. You will butcher the wood. Arrgh! Use the slot maker. I did something similar one time. I completely missed a slot with a hinge resulting in having to cut the other hinges. We all do dumb things from time to time. Here is what I did and it worked.

Using debonder was not good, but you may still be ok. Cut new slot holes with the slot maker right into where the old hinge was. You need a clean slot, but you also need to keep it as tight fitting as possible. Don't grind away at the slot. Once the hole is cleaned out insert a needle into the middle of the new hinge/hinges. This will keep the hinge from slipping deeper into one side or the other. Insert the hinge/ hinges into both the wing and the movable surface. Make sure your alignment is correct. Push it all the way in up to the needle with very little gap. You want a snug fit, but not so tight that the movable surface binds at the hinge. Have debonder and paper towels handy. Then add roughly 6 drops to each side of the hinge while placing the wing and the movable surface at an angle to each other so the CA wicks down to the ends of the hinge on both ends. I always use much more than the 6 drops total recommended in most directions, but not so much that you have CA dripping all over the place. Use the debonder to clean off any drips asap. When you flip the wing over I usually remove the pin at this point before applying CA on the reverse side. Use debonder on a paper towel to clean out the gap area between the wing and the movable surface. You don't want CA bonding to the movable surface and the wing in areas other than the hinge. Move the movable surface up and down to make sure it's clear from the wing and not sticking from CA. Allow to cure over night and then you want to test the mounting of the movable surface. Pull on the movable surface with a firm pull. If this fix worked then there should be no movement at the hinge point. This is where I am concerned about having applied debonder to the slots. This could cause the new CA application to weaken and not bond. Each time you fly the airplane you will want to check to make sure the hinge/hinges are still firmly bonded to the wood. Like I said, this worked one time for me. I always check hinge security in my preflight check regardless of how the installation went.
