What engine on an LT40?

What engine do you all reccomend on an LT40! My choices at the moment are: (feel free to add!)

TT GP42
TT Pro 46
Mag XLS 40
Mag XLS 46
Mag XLS 52
GMS 47
OS 46FX

I'm thinking that the XLS 40 is probably the smallest I want to go for an LT40? Money is somewhat of an issue as a OS 52 isn't an option. I will be taking off from a grass flying field. I'm also at about 2200 feet sea level in Spokane WA. Would a TT GP42 be strong enough or will I be wishing I had a more powerful engine. Moving the engine to another plane isn't something I'm going to do. I'm going to keep a trainer flying all the time. Reliability, parts availability and manufactures support are also issues. Mag, TT and GMS all seem to be a let down in some of those areas. I can't even find a manufacturing website for GMS or Magnum. That concerns me.. Let me know what I should get! Thanks! Chad

XLS52 had one on my 40 5 years , no problems.

Just because of your mid-level altitude, I wouldn't go any smaller than a .45 size. But for a trainer, any one of those will do the job in a LT-40. If you intend to hot-dog some after you learn to fly, then you can try a bigger two-stroke or even a 4 stroke.

I wouls strongly recommend the Evolution .46

It's powerful and inexpensive.

My next choice would be the TT 46

That plane has a big wing, go with a 46 or bigger. My first choice is a tt 46, second would be a evolution 46.

Loved the plane, just wish it would knife edge loop.;)

The tt pro 46 is a good choice ,but hard to get parts for --don't lose a muffler ,or needle valve.I just rebuilt a os 91 FX --Tower had every thing I needed--Might look into a OS-46-FX --be my choice

You didn't say whether it's an ARF or a kit, it might make some difference....

Mine is a new(ish) ARF, it has the bolt on wings and the servo tray is quite forward in the cabin area. It is not tail heavy as some have reported, you don't want a heavy engine.

When I first assembled mine, I installed an Irvine 39. The plane had plenty of power with this combo, and I placed the battery under the tank for balance. I replace the Irvine with an OS46FX, as this engine is a fair bit heavier I had to move the battery back to the rear of the cabin. I didn't see much improvement in the power though..
I've now installed an OS FS70 for break-in purposes. The first flight seemed a little sluggish, but when I leaned the engine out a little for the second flight the plane took off like a rocket :D. The handling is a bit different now though, I think this engine is a little too heavy. Maybe once I've put the Xmas lights on it the extra battery pack will help the CG....

To summerize, this is a light airplane and doesn't need as much power as you might think. Weight is just as important. Pay attention to the weight of the engine you choose with the 46FX being the reference as to the upper limit of the weight range....

My vote is for the OS 46FX or the newest version which I think is called the AX. Next is the TT 46. I also have heard good things about the evolution, but have not run one of them myself.

Go with the O.S. .46 FX or AX engine!

RE: What engine on an LT40?

I'd go for an FX over the newer AX, the new muffler makes it heavier and its no more powerful.....

The OS 46FX is way out in front! Still debating but I'm inclined to take good advice!

My choice would be the 46FX! Its almost the same price as the 40FX and a lot better power. I had a 40FX on my LT40 and when the grass hadn't been cut in a while I was wanting for more power to push through. I have trained other flyers with an FX46 on the front and its a great combo! Also helps big time when the wind whips up and starts pushing those big wings around! [8D]

.46FX it is! I decided the extra money was worth know I would have enough power and a reliable engine! Thanks all!

OS FS 52 four stroke is a perfect match.
But then again its not likely that you will
spend a 179.00 USd for a engine. But if
you can you want regret it.

I considered plonking my ASP 52 4-stroke in mine to see how it goes, but the throttle lever is tucked right in behind the cylinder so it'd be a bit of a pain to re-configure the throttle linkage.
On the FS70, the throttle lever sticks out to the side, so all I had to do was to use a new pushrod bent to loop back to the lever. Works fine....

BTW The ASP 52 only cost $99 off of eb%y, I don't know if the same guy still sells 'em....

I have a TT .46 Pro on mine and have been completely satisfied with it. It has great power and is always easy to start - I hand flip mine. I think it is a lot better deal than the OS due to the price. You can also look into the Tower .46 engine - I haven't run it myself, but it has gotten good reviews and a couple guys I have talked to have liked it.

The Magnum a let down? Never! I don't know where you heard that from but you're wrong. I have heard great comments from others abou their engines and service and alll my queries have been replied to quickly.
As for the website, it is http://www.magnum.globalhobby.com/
hope this helps

Hi, I fly next door at Farragut State Park here in Idaho. A friend has one with the Magnum XLS 46 and another has the OS FX 46, I have flown both and the only diffrence is cost. Come over and observe if you want. Both are good engines so you really can't go wrong. The invitation to fly is always open and we have a great field. We have a number of members from Spokane, so you will be in good company!Bruce:D

RE: What engine on an LT40?

To be honest that doesn't prove a lot.

I first flew my LT-40 with an Irvine 39 then switched to an OS46FX. These two engines might show a big difference in some airframes, but in the LT-40 any difference was hardly noticable. If anything, the FX was worse as the plane dropped its nose more when power was removed. And yes, I did make sure to compensate for the extra weight by moving the battery back.

However, installing the FS70 did make a big difference, but I wouldn't recommend this combo for a beginner as the extra weight affects the handling and there's virtually no prop clearance...

RE: What engine on an LT40?

The OS 46FX is most likely the easiest starting, most powerful of all those recommended. But you said money was a bit of an issue, so I'd say save a few dollars. Go with the Evolution 46, or the Thunder Tiger Pro 46. Less money, but good power and reliability. ;)

Read Minnflyer's review of the Evolution before you buy!
