what does anybody think of the la 40 for a kadet lt 40[:@]:eek::eek::eek:

Well you can use it, but you won't have that much power, and are gonna have to let it roll on the runway for a while on takeoff and holf it at a low angle while you climb. It is not the best engine for the plane but I wouldn't also say it's underpowered. You can fly it, just don't expect much out of it. I would buy a TT .46 BB great engine. And you can do some other stuff that don't include level flight:D

I learned with a Kadet LT-40. My motor was a weak K&B 40 with less power than the LA 40. The smaller engines allow this plane to fly a little slower while you are learning. The LT-40 has a large wing and it really likes to climb. It also provided me with enough power on missed landings. Go for it.

The weak LA40 will work fine for the trainer. If you ever want to use your trainer engine in another plane down the road you might get something with a bit more power. On your 50th flight with your trainer when you're getting good, and you end up turning it into a pile of small wood pieces while flying inverted, it's nicer to pick a decent .46 out of the rubble and say "I really need to put this in an Ultra Stick anyways"...:) An LA40 isn't a good engine for many second planes. Then again, if you make your 50th flight and grease the landing and have a few extra $$$ you might donate the LA40 and trainer to your club, and get a new Ultra Stick 40 and Irvine .53 for your second plane. That doesn't happen very often though. Your first trainer is like your first bike, you love them till they die or get stolen..:) - Joe

Until about 6 years ago, everyone put 40's on their trainers, then all of a sudden everyone HAD to have 46's. :eek: So yes, the LA 40 would be fine.

But as has been said, the 40 will be pretty underpowered on your next plane, so I'd say get a 46LA or a Thunder Tiger 46 Pro. (If you can afford it, the OS 46 FX is a reat engine.)

it seems that the la series of engines was OS's attempt to supply a low cost engine for the entry level pilot. In my opinion it was a mistake, from what I have wittnessed the engine is weak compared to other manufacturers .40's and is nowhere as reliable as the fx series. If you are determined to use OS engines,
(which I personnely think is a very smart choice) I would spend the extra money and buy a fx series engine you will be a lot happier down the road.
