Second Plane Advice
 

Hi,

My trainer is still in the box, but I am already thinking about my second plane. I want to buy a kit and buy it so I can build it next winter. I was looking at a P-51D Mustang, would that be a pretty good second plane after a year, maybe 2 on a trainer?

I would save the P-51 for a third plane and get some experience on a mid wing sport plane first like a Sig Mid Star or somthing similar.

Most P-51's tend to nose over on landing if you are not very careful or unless you put the main landing gear farther forward than usual.

My P-51 (Midwest 40 size) was about the 5th plane I built. I flew it a lot, I put bomb drop mechanisms on it, but looking back I don't think it was any more fun to fly than my other sport planes.

Nope,

Save the warbirds for the thrid or typically fourth plane.

Fly the guts out of the trainer. You should be able to do lots with the trainer: inverted, loops, tailslides, cuban 8s and a few other aerobatic manoeuvers. then move to a 'low wing plane, such as the every so popular Sig 4 Star series..

from there, you'll just be getting better, and better....

Wait a little until you get your own feel for what you can do. You will have a far better idea after you have quite a bit of time on the trainer. Afer you become proficent with the trainer maybe someone will check you out on their low wing(buddy box). A whole new world! Then make your choice.:)

I'm doing right now what you wanted to do rider_89, with mixed emotions about it. I've only flown my trainer a couple of times, but am putting together an Ultra Stick 40 with an Irvine .53 in it. It's supposed to be an awesome plane, but the ARF kit sure has it's bugs. I wish I'd have held off to buy a 2nd plane. Now that I see some of the guys way cool planes at the club I wish I'd have got one of them. My plan of getting a high wing, fairly sturdy, easy to fly, aerobatic stick was a good one. It's just that I'm picky, and what I chose to build takes some serious modifications for a newbie to build right. Also, after a couple of flights on the trainer (Xtra Easy 2) I'm seeing how it is capable of a lot more than I initially thought. I won't out grow it, or be ready for a US 40 with a big engine anytime soon. - Joe

Thanks Joe. I am probably going to use my trainer for the next summer atleast, maybe 2, then I will think of my next plane for a winter project.

Build a flat (no dihedral) wing for your trainer and keep flying it, IMHO way to many people are in a hurry to ditch the trainer and get a "war bird" or "scale plane", if you use your trainer as a second plane but with a new wing your saving $$$$ and still flying not to far from your trainer brain comfort zone .

My Trainer is Avistar so it should last a while since the Avistar's wings are already sord of like that.

Zimbo, you're as bad as me dude! I've flown my trainer twice, and read here a ton. I find myself giving out fairly technical advice when I'm such a newbie! I think it's cuz I've read so much here (like you?) You're still waiting for your first plane to arrive, but are giving decent advice on a 2nd plane for someone. It's just because you've read here so much like me. For a 12 year old, you catch on as fast as us geezers. Don't you have homework to do?..:) - Joe

I have to agree with making a 4 star your next plane. Its simple to build, inexpensive, has an incredible speed range, is quite aerobatic and is easy to fly. For the price of the plane, it can't be beat!!![8D]

well, sometimes i put little endings telling people to listen to others if they contradict me.

Nah, schools out and the weathers been pretty terrible round here so RCuniverse is right now taking all my attention even thought my sisters are constantly at me for staying on here...oh well, family, I never asked for sisters as I am the youngest>>>

Four stars are great second planes. I liked mine so much that I got another one for my third plane. Here are some pictures of my 4*'s. I sure like the look of the 4*40 ARF that I might have to get me one of these too.
