Done with the hobby...

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

I was a 2 season Sig LT40 flyer, had great fun and then decided to build my first tail-dragger, I got a Venture60, from Bruce Tharpe Engineering. A great plane to build for my first kit, it was enjoyable. But after crashing it on my maiden voyage, which I prolly shouldn't have flown, I was utterly discouraged and am giving up the hobby :)

*Tosses his RC Wings on the desk*

For any new flyers out there or old, I am selling a great condition OS FX Max 61 engine with accesories on ebay. SO here is my shamless plug to try to re-coop some cash back that I invested in the hobby.

Item number on ebay you can search for it.
Ebay Item Number: 3167544905

Everything in the attached picture is what I am getting rid of.

Good luck to you all and have fun with flying.

Out.

Sorry to hear that you are giving up the hobby. If you are serious about selling your items, I recommend that you place them in the marketplace on RCU for prompt attention

HI TOEDWY!! YOU KNOW YOURSELF BETTER THAN ANYONE OF US DOES, so I think it would not be my place to say anything except it's too bad you had to suffer such a loss so soon. [:o]Look at the postings where guys are asking advice for a good second plane, and one of the replies was right on the money when it was said that you are more likely to crash your second plane than your first. I was one of those guys. I learned alot from my crash, but made the same mistake [stalled on approach] with a plane that was considered a beginner pattern type. BILLY HELL [over at the PRO BRO forum] has a saying, " there are 3 kinds of flyers, those who have crashed, those who are about to crash, and those who are crashing right now!" I think he stole it from CONFUSCIOUS!:D

TOEDWY,
It sounds as though you do enjoy flying and also building. Don't throw in the towel after just one crash, it happens to everyone. While crashing is not a very enjoyable part of this hobby, it is the experience in your pocket that takes the place of the $$ you just lost. Try to decipher the cause of the crash and learn from it. Don't be afraid to ask for help from someone with more experience. I'm not condemning your decision but if everyone quit after their first crash, there wouldn't be very many people enjoying this great sport. Stick with it, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did. ;)

Don`t give up! You said yourself that you enjoyed flying your trainer. If you still have it, why not go back and fly it a while? You`ll probably get the feeling of enjoyment back and after a while can move on to another plane ( always an excellent idea to get the most experienced pilot you can find to maiden a new plane! ). I got frustrated and discouraged while learning every time I dinged up my Avistar. Hell, I got so bad that one day I rolled it on a landing ( no damage even ) and if somebody right then had asked me if I wanted to sell my stuff I`d have practically GIVEN them everything! Anyway, I came to the realization that this is a hobby where YOU BREAK THINGS. It just happens. If you can come to accept that then you`ll be OK. Stick with it! I did and I`m really glad I did!

I always have a pilot better than me maiden anything I build. When I get to the point that I don't know anyone better than me, I'll do it myself. Don't think that'll happen anytime soon!

I do all of my own, and many others, maiden flights. However, I always have another flier whom I trust look things over before putting any plane into the air for the first time. A loose hinge or screw is easy for you to miss, but it is harder for another to miss... A simple checklist has proven very valuable in finding the most common flaws...

As others have already said don't be too hasty is selling all of your stuff... Wait a couple of weeks before making such a hasty decision -- things may no seem as grim later... I've seen several planes totally destroyed on their maiden flights. It's part and parcel of the hobby. It's the challenge that makes your palms sweat and your knees knock the first time a new machine is committed to its fate...

Hey TOEDWY,
If that engine survived the crash, the plane was probably repairable! ;)

I agree with Galen. Wait a couple weeks before you toss your wings, you may feel differently. I've crashed more times than I care to think about, even had a couple of days where I crashed two planes. But after a cooling off period, I looked at those wrecks and was able to fix them in 20 or less hours.

[:o]Been there! I have a Sig Four Star 120. I caught a wing tip on it's second flight! Split the plane in half! Spread out for ten feet parts everywhere! I had the for thought to pick up the pieces! I wanted to throw the radio at the wreck and leave it all right there! I put it on the bench for a week never opened the garage door! Came home one day, said it's time started putting the puzzle together with CA then. Built a new wing saddle out of 3/4 inch plywood so the plane would not snap in half again! That was three years ago and It's still flying! As is my LT 40.

It's a great hobby short of the crashes! Cheer up and get some CA. They put humpty dumbty back together!

In fact this F-16 in my post is new from the cowl forward! 50 or 60 flights since repair!

Well I'm going to be a bit harsh here only because I have been doing this for 50 years and I am only 59. You my friend give up way to easy!!! In life if something doesn't go right the first or second time do you give up?? If you do then no amount of talking will change your mind. I have crashed more planes then you will probably build in a lifetime, uh that is if you decide to stay in the hobby and if I had quit I would have missed out on one of the best and most fun hobbies out there. When you fall off a horse you get back on and keep trying until you get it right, now the choice is yours, you can put your tail between your legs and give up or you can get that trainer back out and go back and fly till you're a more competant flier, choice is yours my friend.

RE: Done with the hobby...

i've crashed 3 planes now. one of which i built from scratch. it is very frustrating indeed. all i can say is don't give up! there is nothing more to it. i will never quit this hobby, it is way to fun. i hope that you are just venting and will re-asess the damage. most planes are very easily fixed. i always hate to think about someone leaving this hobby. i am one of those guys that are always trying to get people into r/c flying. if you still have your trainer, you can still fly. i am sorry to hear that your plane died on it's maiden voyage, i've had that happen to me before. it's sad, and depressing, but not enough to make me quit. you never quit trying to walk when you are a kid, otherwise you'd be crawling out to the flying field. you know more now then you knew when you were a kid. so asess what happened, learn, correct, and move on! that's my theory on the subject. regardless you will do what you want, but i hope you keep flying.

luds, i admire you. all that work! geez. i don't know what to say, i don't think i would have done that one.

TOEDWY
Hello,
I was a 2 season Sig LT40 flyer, had great fun
-I dont think you gave the hobby or yourself a fair chance.
-I wonder if you realise how many ppl within 2 seasons have crashed
-I've been at this hobby for about a year, and at my club very experianced ppl crashed almost everytime
I was at the field, and it looked like they enjoyed it, and they would fix'em right there at the field and sometimes if it were really bad they took the planes home and be back the next day flying them.

A great plane to build for my first kit, it was enjoyable. But after crashing it on my maiden voyage, which I prolly shouldn't have flown, I was utterly discouraged and am giving up the hobby
I just hope this doesn't send the wrong message to other newbies, it's an awsome hobby.
As for me being a newbie, I know crashes happen and I expect it. But on the other hand I also look forward to
rebuilding it. and with all the great ppl out here, there is always help and I mean a lot of great help.

sorry to see ya leave the hobby, hope you dont give up on other things this easy.

-Mark

I've read through this thread and all of the responses. This is a hobby, not a wife and children he's walking out on. The best thing anyone can do is assume the man made a well thought out descision. The worst thing a person could do is talk to him like he is an eight year-old by telling him he's running with his tail tucked and that he gives up too easily. This is a hobby and to assume he handles all obstacles in his life in the same manner would be foolish.

I crashed 4 planes last summer 2 i repaired 2 were not fixable but i have rebuilt my fleet with 4 more for this summer. That is half the fun building and rebuilding some of my planes are better than new after a rebuild. [X(]

I was nearly giving up the hobby - due to several crashes. But after a couple of months i felt for a new try and whats happened? I had never been flying better and now I looking forward to take part in my clubs competition in the spring time. My advise is - give the hobby a break and come back when you feel you are ready for it!

welp zetor, basically what I'm sure we were all saying is that:

1. he said he had great fun, and building.
lets weigh it out

he enjoyed the hobby until 1 crash on the first flight of his venture60
just seems to me gave up too easy if he was enjoying the hobby.

He's an adult I'm sure, and by all means no one is degrading him.
This hobby is about helping ppl enjoy what we do in this hobby.

and no one mentioned family either.
I have no more to say on this post. Take it for whats it's worth.

"Good luck in whatever U do"

I grew up in Colorado and we had a saying in skiing. "You are not learning anything if your not falling." I have always remembered this and use it in most things I do. I have been told by those more experienced than me that you do learn in a crash even if you don't know what it is at the time. I lost four planes this summer (two my fault and two not) I figure that I have learned enough for a while and have replaced 2 of the four with other planes. It's your choice, but at least give yourself a little time to assess your final decision.

Hate to see you give up such a great hobby so fast, when I first started 3Ding I smacked 7 planes in less than a year,I still can't fly but I don't crash as much, besides crashing is a bonus, you get to build the the same plane over.:)

RE: Done with the hobby...

If you fly your going to crash. There is no way to get really good without crashing. If your model is still in perfect condition then your not pushing yourself enough :) . I crash about once every other week (usually doing outrageous stuff). Its just part of the hobby.

RE: Done with the hobby...

You just need some time to cool down and figure out what went wrong. How many times did you damage your LT 40?
I crashed my first trainer so many times it looked like the Jenny that Jim Stewart flew into that army field in the Spirit of Saint Louis movie.
And I still crash models!!! I pick up the pieces and try again. There's a couple of sayings that hold true for RC model fliers.
1, Every model has a built in crash date. (and you may not be the cause)
2, I build, I fly, I crash. This never seems to end.

And sometimes you have to take a step back to go forward. Learn from you mistakes and try again!
Good Luck and have fun!!! [&:]

RE: Done with the hobby...

come on towedy! you are giving up the hobby because of a crash? i had my first crash 6 months into my trainer and the plane was a total writeoff. that happens, but the parts usually survive and you have to live with it. crashes aren't the most lovable part of the hobby, but if you sell now you will get an urge 6 months from now, a very strong urge to come back, because you feel you haven't completed what you first set out to do- get building experiance, have a lot of fun, get good at it, and continue mastering this hobby. sence my trainer (although only one was my fault) i have snapped my fuselage clear in half, smacked a bald guy in the head with a park flyer due to interferance from the tx he was holding, drilled the propshaft of that same plane into a tree, totaled it on your friendly neighborhood stadium lightpost, broke an engine head (my fault) and rip off a wing in mid flight. it happens to all of us, it's part of the hobby. by starting into this hobby, you are trusting the money you spent in your growing skills and in the seasoned skills of an instructor. i would hate to see you leave the hobby because that trust you established between you and your plane failed. If you still enjoy the hobby, but don't want to put a lot of money into a gas plane, go small electric. it's a lot of fun. but leaving the hobby because of a crash is really a harsh move. if you have any interest in the hobby or have a passion for flight, this hobby is the only real one to suit you. to abandon it would be the wrong move. however, the most painful part would be after you left because you would have this strong pull to come back to that which you abandoned, but you don't want to spend more money on it and you will wind up kicking yourself for selling it all now.
however, i can only suggest
whatever decision you make is what is to happen, and no amount of advice can change that. i respect your choice

almost everyone has crashed. Think about people who crash there giant scale model that they built.
