Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Today I was able to fly my new 4* ARF and after I got done I walked up to the guys at the feild and said "Do you know anyone that want's to buy a trainer?"
It's a great feeling to know you have been able to move up an beyond what you started with. I figured I was ready since I was able to fly circuts around the field inverted with the trainer. :) Now what's my 3rd plane going to be?!?!?! |

WTG! Like you said, It's a great feeling! ENJOY IT!!!! :D :D :D

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Keep the trainer and "bash" it up a little! Maybe try and find a semi-symmetrical wing that fits it. Or add flaps and dual aileron servos to "practice" on. That is what I am doing on mine!!

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Agrees......SOMETHIN' EXTRA all the way.......haven't put the kit together but the ARF was very easy to put together...very good instruction and didn't get mixed up one time......well actually alot of time........well you how us men are.........don't like to lok at the actual instructions...just the pictures until you don't understand somethin and then you look at the written part.....got off topic there but....the Somethin' Extra should'a been your 2ND plane........make sure if you get the SE, you get an engine at or over a .46........an Irvine .53 would be fine........Hope this helps.....

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
My advise is keep the trainer! You never know when you might be able to entise a new person to join this hobby with a short intro flight!

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Keep the trainer, add floats or skis, add a larger engine, strap on a camera, bash it, practice with it in windy conditions, the list goes on...
I'm already making some skis for my Kadet Sr. and will probably try floats this summer. -Jinks |

Fury, keep the trainer, if for nothing but a back-up plane for the day you bring the 4* home a mite banged up, and it will happen. Then too, if you take it and the 4* out to the field and have a problem with the 4*, you can always crank up the trainer and have a ball horsing it through some slow speed aerobatics. You'll be surprised what those old "school marms" can do with an experienced hand on the TX (and you should have the experience by now.) Enjoy!

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
I just finished building a four star forty. I am waiting for a weekend day that is not freezing to fly it. Is it a lot harder to fly than your trainer was?
|
RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
I agree that you should keep your trainer. There are a lot of good reasons to have an "expendable" airplane. If you ever crash your plane and you think the radio works ok, then put it in the trainer after you've tested it and find nothing wrong. If you ever send your radio in for repair, then put it in your trainer to check it. Ask how many people have had radios repaired that came back and didn't work.
It's good to have at least one plane around that you don't really care too much about. |

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Good,
Its killing me not being able to fly it. I want to have an experienced pilot fly it first since it is a low wing. Problem is, I don't think most sensible people probably fly in 20 degree weather, I know I sure wouldn't if it weren't for the fact of I really want to fly this plane for the first time. If it don't warm up soon I may just take it up myself. I had an LT 40, it was great. I never really crashed it because of flying ability, just crashed it because I am dumb I guess. I dove really hard then pulle up fast and the wings snapped. So I am fairly confident but I just hate to end up crashing it because of impatience. That was a lot of work building. Wings |
RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
Wings - Don't feel bad. Everyone crashes. All my crashes are due to piloting mistakes - not failure of the aircraft or systems. Each was avoidable, but they still happen.

Keep the trainer, and get a Hanger 9 Pizzazz! OS 70 or Saito 71 four stroke, now you will have some fun!!:D

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
wings (and all)...don't be afraid of going out in below freezing temps. I got cabin fever the other day and lo and behold a break in the weather had me out to the field. I drove past the "park closed" sign and had to use a tire iron to get thru the club gate but once inside had the whole place to myself. It was 28 deg....perfectly calm, partly cloudy. If it had been summer it would have been 75. Anyway, I fired up my OS 46 and becuase of the cold temps and dense air leaned it out a little more that normal...they run soooo smoooth in the cold, and fly.....same cold dense air.....smooth with no thermals, short takeoffs, gentle landings, WOW...best 2 hours I spent all winter! Go For It (but wear fingerless gloves!)

RE: Bye Bye Trainer - HELLO FLYING FUN!
I got to agree with everyone who says keep the trainer. You never know when you're gonna want to flight test something, a new engine, receiver, and don't want to put it in your latest and greatest.

Hey man......I just got the Somethin' Extra..........got the OS .46AX and didn't know where to break the engine in on........I didn't want to put the mount on a heavy block of wood and do it that way.......so.....I just though....I have two planes now...I'll just use that ol' handy dandy Superstar and break that OS in.....
