Nylon Tape
 

First time model builder and I have a question. The instruction say to put this tape around the center of the wing. It has no adhesive of it's own. I assume I am supposed to wrap it and then soak it with CA. Is that correct? Thanks for the help. DC

If you are not putting together an ARF it is probably fiberglass cloth.
I have used CA but prefer thinned epoxie.

It is not a ARF. It is a kit. Thanks for your reply. I am down to the final stages of construction and so far everything is working out well. My complant as a first time builder is this paticular model instructions are kind of vague in a few places. For a first timer in the middle of nowhere this forum is my only real source of info. The instructions assume that if you are building you must know all there is to know about RC planes. Once again thanks for your help. DC

It could be nylon tape - some kits come with it. Either CA or epoxy will work. If you use epoxy, I would warm it to help it flow instead of thinning it. Thinning epoxy can cause problems like it not curing properly. It's been a constant debate here and some people say they have no problems with thinning epoxy and others say they do. Your choice.

I would use fiberglass and C/A.
Sand to a smooth finish.

Go with CA, but make sure you ventilate well ! That's an awful lot of fumes. Ooooh my poor Nose !!! [&:]

I went with the CA. It worked out fine. Any of you guy's happen to be in North Missouri? I've gotten the RC bug fairly bad and don't know any one that is handy to learn from. I feel bad that at 43 years of age there's 12 year old's out there that know way more then me. I am getting close to the covering stage. That should be a trip for me. I don't have a clue how to do that. I've read a lot about it but no hands on experiance, nor have I ever seen it done. I read and then reread everything and so far so good. As for the covering, I would recommend practicing A LOT before attempting to cover your actual plane. Maybe you can make random pieces out of extra balsa you have and cover them... covering can easily be extremely hard to do for a beginner (I had troubles), but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze... usually :D Anyways, that's what I've got to say. PRACTICE! That's how I learned.

Hey DC, don't feel bad. I will be turning 47 in June and have yet to start assembling my trainer. Too much snow on the ground yet.

Really, don't get too concerned about being the 'old guy' learning. My experience with building included a lot of free flight, but I didn't get into RC until my daughter met a guy who was fiishing his degree as a Mechanical Engineer. He taught me to fly my trainer. Turned out to be a good thing for both of us. We got to know each other better.

You might find out that there is something to be gained by working with younger flyers.
