I bought an airplane at a garage sale. The man said his son built it years ago. It has atop mount
wing with aflat bottom. I believe the engine is about an 040. There"s no radio equip.
nor are there any weights. I hope this does"nt sound stupid, but I wondered if there is fomula
or rule of thumb for finding a starting point for cg.
Any help would be app.
THANKS Ron

On this type of plane the CG is probably right on the spar. Can you feel or see the spar running parallel to the wing leading edge about 1/3 of the way back from the leading edge? If you can not detect the spar, then assume 1/4 or 1/3 back from the leading edge. in other words if the chord of the wing is 12 inches, measure back 3 or 4 inches. Slightly nose heavy is better than tail heavy for first flights

I agree. Once you fly it (Let a qualified pilot fly it if you're not one yourself), you can decide (if it's flying too sluggish, or lands too hot) to add tail weight, or if it's too hairy, add nose weight.

A picture of the plane would help confirm all of the above...

We are kind of assuming its a trainer.

RE: CG

Thanks guys for the info. I"ll be sure to let someone (with more skill than myself ) try it
the first time. It may be awhile, the weather here in NE Ohio is"nt exactly ideal for flying.
thanks again for the replys
Ron
