First Attempt at CA hinges??

I am planning to use ca hinges. I have read the "how to artical" but am wondering how to keep the ca off the covered areas. I saw where some use syringes. Where is a good place to get a syringe without a prescription? or is there another way?

Syringes are probably overkill. Go to your LHS and get some of the CA tip extenders. They're about 1 1/2 inches long and give you good control. For the hinge, cut the covering and make a little rectangle of wood around the hinge slot. Maybe 1/8 wide total and about 1/4" longer than the length of the slot. Do this for both sides. Seal the remaining covering very well.

When you put the glue on, the wood and the slot will wick the CA in. If you are getting it on the covering, you are putting too much on. A few drops on each side is plenty. Hope this helps, Chuck

Just be careful putting the drips of CA on the hinge-line and it will wick right into the hinge.

2 drops per hinge one side... then 2 drops per hinge the other... then do the first side again... then the second side again. It'll soak up the CA and be nice and firm. (you can put up to 6 drops per side of each hinge if you want...)

The main cause of CA running off is putting too much in one spot at a time.

Another tip that works for me.
Drill a 3/32 hole right in the middle of each hinge slot. Be sure to fit the hinged surfaces up snug, but allow full movement of the hinged surface. Dont leave anymore gap than is absolutley necessary to get the movement you need. Maybe 1/16-1/8" max.

Ditto on drilling a hole in the middle of the slot so the CA can get al the way to the end of the hinge.
Push a straight pin through the middle of the hinge so when you place the control surface, the hinge will not be pushed too far into the slot.
Bend the control surface down as far as it will go while keeping it butted against the pin and add the CA, turn the stab or wing over , bend the surface in the other direction and add more CA (2 to 3 drops per side). Remove the pins and your done.

Lynn19531,
If you know anyone who is a diabetic you could probably get a syringe or two from them. They do work well. If you end up getting CA on the covering don't sweat it, just use some acetone on a tissue to clean it off. The acetone will work even if the CA is dried and it won't hurt the covering.
