.46 Evolution Cylinder chipping????
 

Just finished flying my Sig Senior with a new .46 Evolution. This is a engine that is suppose to be set from the factory and is already broken in. First couple of starts it wouldn't keep an idle. I had to adjust the idle needle. I actually had to go past the limiter about 1/2 turn. After that the engine ran great. Flew the plane 4 times then called it a day. The engine had great power and great excelleration. Brought the plane home and opened up the engine to see how it was wearing after the first time out. To my surprise the top of the cylinder sleeve is chipped away. Now this is a brand new engine with less than two 2 1/2 tanks of gas through it. Has anyone seen this happen before. I am going to contact Horizon hobbie to see what they say. It still has great compresion and it starts just fine. The chip is at the top off the sleeve and is about 1/2 wide x 1/4 down the sleeve. Wondering how long it will last or should I just buy another sleeve and piston for it. Thinking about going back to OS

I have been in this hobby for a while now and have come to realize that there can be the occasional faulty part, plane, or engine of any brand that gets past quality control checks. Weather a customer will buy again depends on the backing of the product. Don't give up on the Evolution engine yet! Contact the store where it was bought and wait to see how they handle the situation. Chances are that they will ask you to return the engine and they will replace it with a new one. Let us know how you make out. [8D]

Ditto to what Fast said. Evo has excellent customer service, and the engines are excellent as well.

I'd also contact Horizon or the place you bought the engine. I haven't heard of this happening before, but it's possible. Were you running the engine on the lean side? Could it have been running hot? I'm not at all saying it's your fault, I'm just curious.

Btw, you're not the only person to have to over-ride the stops on the Evo engines. Needle settings can vary quite a bit depending on fuel and air density and humidity. So the problem there might just be that the place where it was run is different enough from where you are.

(btw, before you rush off to OS, you might want to know that the OS FX line of engines had a major problem with exactly the defect you just experieneced, the liner would peal off if the engine was run too hot. They seem to have corrected the problem, and they are good engines, but they aren't immune to problems either)

I also got bad quality control for my evolution 46. A Bad carb from factory made me waste several weeks trying to tune the engine without sucess.
Sent it to Horizon and after they replace the carb, the engine looks much better, not 100% in my point of view, but acceptable, so far.

Well I contacted Horizon. They said send it in and they'll take care of it. Said the turn around time is around 5 days. i'll keep you posted.

What I just don't agree is that, even after they fixing it and concluding its was a factory problem, you have to care of chipping expenses when you send it to then.
I think they should reimburse you this money, but they don't.

I agree they should reimburse shipping.....cost 15.00 to ship to Illinois. I hope this thing runs like new when I get it back.

Well gentlemen I just got the engine back. They replaced the piston and cylinder sleeve. No charge.

Good deal. Like I said, both their engines and their service is excellent.
