RE: How old are you?

At 61, I've been modeling for a bit more than 50 years. I started out with paper planes made from garbage bags. It all started after watching my first dogfight on our new TV back in 1952 and I've been dog fighting ever since.. Time is catching up with me now and I have to keep increasing the size of my planes so that I can see them. I really love to fly my new 46% ULTIMATE. I'm going the the WRAM show this weekend and find out whats new, bigger and better.

In defense of the old geezers. [>:]

I'm 68 going on 69, married 49 years and love models of all types. Used to design my own hand launch gliders years ago, now with the arm getting weak I need the engine to get my plane in the air.

I can always rely on gravity bringing it back, works every time.

As far as old geezers not being computer savvy, I use mine every day. Taught myself and have designed and posted my own web site (Cars of Yesteryear).

A word to the young - your time is coming enjoy it all. :)

You want a BIG plane?
Get a Fisher Flying Products ultralight. 100% scale model plane, made mostly of wood, and you can fly in it when you are done. Another company like this is T.E.A.M. aircraft, Hi-Max and Mini-Max.

RE: How old are you?

35, but I had to count on my fingers starting from '68 to get there. The funny thing is... I could have sworn I was 36. My knees say at least 60.

The great thing about getting older and having a steady job (Thank God for the USMC) is that I can buy all the toys that my parents would never have. I looked at the account portion of Tower Hobbies and to date, 2 years, I've spent almost... well, never mind that part.

The point is, I've never looked at a clear sunny sky with no wind the same since starting this wonderful hobby.

Well, I guess this poll doesn't show the exact #'s. Maybe for the people who fly RC planes, has a computer, and posts on RCuniverse. All in all though, I was expecting the average age to be older than it was. Very interesting.

RE: How old are you?

Well.... I was 47 last year (so I thought) until my wife informed me that I was only 46!!! I had to get out the old calculator to verify this and she was right. :) So now I am 47 again until next January and I feel like I have gained a year of life (Flying).:D It doesn' matter however, as my mind stopped maturing at age 12.

The worst part about this is that couldn't figure it out myself - I am an engineer by profession.[:o]

RE: How old are you?

I'm surprised by the pole results so far (26-35 yr in the lead). This is typically the age range where children take up a lot of time and money, and don't leave much for a hobby. I know that's the case in my other hobby of model trains.

RE: How old are you?

Way too old!!!

Seriously though, I was fascinated by the statistics, and how the age groups each side of 26-35 were dramatically lower than that group. I also thought that the 26-35 group would have had more important??? things to spend their money on, like kids, wives, mortgages etc, but maybe not so. Maybe people are having kids a little later than that these days, or maybe it`s that they do have kids, and they need the time away doing something really worthwhile like flying models, so hang the expense.

The next age group are probably wasting their money on divorce settlements etc.

RE: How old are you?

I started at 34 and quit at 34 because , the trainer didnt want to be bothered with me (I bought the plane and radio from him at his store which also went under), I found a club that was mostly a snooty group of pattern flyers (not that theres anything wrong with that) who broke off from the local club that I didnt know anything about...then about 2 years ago I got back into it with parkflyers ,, I'm 45 now , and met the regular guys and we have 2 great club fields, one is only 6 miles from the house..turns out the snoots club fell through after about a year so they had to go back to the local guys:eek:, but I'm real glad I got back into the hobby and met some nice folks....Rog

RE: How old are you?

33. I started November of last year. My side business that I started last summer had a lot of money sitting in the account, so it was time for an owner-draw. Went straight to the LHS and said I wanted a plane. They got me hooked up with everything that I needed (except for club and AMA info). Went out to the county park and found someone to start teaching me. 3 days later I was solo. The training was all pass the box. Then I demolished the plane in the trees (only pieces left. got the important ones anyway). Had to buy the ARF version of my trainer so I could get back in the air! :D

Anyway, in Winston-Salem there is a city/county park called Hobby Park. 350' asphalt runway, 2 asphalt control line circles, dirt car and truck track, and an offroad bicycle course. And lots of trees! Like some of the old-timers in the club state "If you can fly at Hobby Park, you can fly anywhere!" You don't have to join a club to fly at Hobby Park, but dues are only $20/yr. And the LHS gives a 10% discount to club members. I have already recouped the dues in savings at the LHS!
