First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
Well, some people would never admit their bad experiences because of their pride, but I think I should share my experience with you guys! :-)
It's friday night.... midnight, I'm with my buddies and I just finished my plane. I can't take it!!!!!! I just HAVE to fly it right away... :D So I put gaz in and I hop in my car and drive to the nearest park. So... I have a Kadet LT-25 with a .25 FX motor and it's not even broken in yet... So I told myself that I was just going to fly it 5 mintues... won't hurt anything right... I live in Montreal, Canada, so it's -10 degrees Celcius with a 20-30 KMH hours winds and 40-50 KMH Gust :D I really didn't give a sh*% I just wanted to see it in the air... So I start my engine and left it running rich... :) The damn thing won't take off... too much snow... so I ask my buddy to hand launch it and so he does. My plane immediatly dives while slightly turning right.... landing gear ripped off and the underbody of the front fuselage cracked, nothing too serious. But I don't give up, I put a rubber band to old the fuselage and ask my friend to launch it again (without landing gear since it ripped off, I actually told myself I would figure something out when time would come to land :D ) But this time I set is slightly leaner... cuz I suspected that it didn't have enough power to take off while running rich. He did a good lauch... but I didn't react quickly enough and my plane crash nose first in a snow bank. Properler and the coil broked... Brought it back home, replaced properler and fixed everything in under 15 mintues. But I still didn't get the message.... I went back out, this time in a huge parking lot. My engine never started... it was too cold... Hehehe [&:] So I learned the following... 1- Don't try to fly with a unbroken engine.... I obviously didn't know what I was doing (Fixed that tho, I talked to my hobbie shop guy and he explained everything properly) 2- Don't try to fly with gusty winds.... duh!!! 3- Be patient.... although it's SOOOO hard when the plane is just sitting there staring at you looking like if he was saying.... (c'mon fly me... c'mon I know you want too, c'mon I'll be nice and not crash) :) 4- And never hand launch when you are a newbie The damage was minimal and I did learn a few things. I will be breaking my engine properly this week and depending on weather conditions, next weekend I should be in the air. This time I will be taking off asphalt and not hand launching. |

I suggest that if you keep up this flying on your own stuff, that you stick to flying over snow instead of parking lots. The damage that was incurred was nothing compared to hitting asphalt.
Better is to find someone who knows what they're doing to help you out. |
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
test flight at midnight. Bet the neigbors love that.
I think you need a lesson in patients. As stated, get help flying the thing before you do some serious damage to someone on the ground. These things can kill someone if they hit them. I am really hoping you are exagerating a lot. Why would you try to fly it in 40 to 50 KPH wind? That is pretty strong. |
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
and you're legally allowed to drive a car?
|
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
For those concerned with neighbors and safety, the place was deserted with no houses in sight. I might be excited and looking forward to flying the thing, but I'm not that dumb to put my friend and myself in a dangerous position, or bother people at anytime of the day. Although it might not sound that way, I am a responsible person.
I know I could get an instructor, but I'm a self-learning kinda of guy, and I'm fully aware that chances are high for me to crash my plane. But I'm willing to take a chance. I'm just want to give heads up to the guys who are hesitating on going solo or with instructor. :D I'll let you guys know next week how everything went! |

Are you a member of AMA?
|
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
There is no AMA in Canada, it's under another name... I forgot what it is. But I'm planning to join it this summer. I will also join a club.
I'm also legally able to drive! I'm 24 years old. CafeenMan; you asked what I have learned so far?!?!? Well I ask you: Did you actually read my entire post? :D [&o] Why are some of you guys hating??? |

I think we already know what is going to happen. [&o]

RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
It isn't a hating thing when we tell you not to do what you did. It is the fact that we see posts like this many many times over and over, and they all go the exact same way. People think they can learn to fly with absolutly no help, and crash, get frusterated, crash again, some hurt people, a few last year killed the person holding the plane or trying to help them.
We all just don't want to read another accident like that. In december in Texas, an instructor was helping a guy fly heli, the next thing you know, the instructor is laying on the ground. The heli got him in the throat and killed him. The things are not toys. We just want you to realize that. What you have exhibited so far is very poor judgment in a lot of our eyes. We are not telling you this to be rude, mean, hatefull or anything like that, we just don't want to see you get frusterated, hurt or anything like that. The planes are a lot of fun, but can be darn dangerous if someone is flying them in an unsafe maner. If you get it airborn and something goes wrong, are you going to be able to do anything with it. Probably not, you don't know how to make it do what it needs to do. That is the point everyone is trying to make. Don't take it that they are being hatefull. We just see this over and over. |
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
my very first flight with no prior rc airplane experience, i took off, flew around, did loops and rolls, and landed, all my self, no help.
self taught people are scarce, but they exist and it can be done. just be safe and fly happy! sean |
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
When I read about guys sitting around at midnight bored the first thing that pops in my mind is how much alcohol was involved in these decisions? See the flyers age and reading his comments makes me think quite a bit. If nothing else there was a ton of poor judgement involved and careless behavior. Seems to be very "ME" orientated. Reminds me of the young guy at the club yesterday who ignored the direction everyone was flying and took off against the agreed upon pattern and continued to fly against the pattern until everyone else landed. Ignored the President of the club when he asked him to fly with the pattern and when he landed and everyone else took off again did the same thing. It will be interesting to see how the club handles this.

RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)
Why do these people feel the need to do this? I fly as a sort of guest at the local club (I am not part of the club but the company that I work for owns the land) and there is one guy who continually flies recklessly. I have been concerned enough to run out of the way of his model twice this week, once whilst I was flying my own model.
I am not really part of the club and the others have been together for years. It drives me mad. I think he's got the message that I'm not impressed. If it happens again I am going to have to take some drastic action! |
RE: First try at flying without a trainer! Not to good! :-)

If you have the money to buy replacement equipment and the willingness to contiue crashing and rebuilding, and people and property are not endangered - have at it...
With average skills, I reckon you'll invest around $3000-$4000 CDN in learning to fly... RC manufacturers will love you!! ;) Cheers! Jim |
