uneven elevator
Ive done every thing i can to try and mae this damm elevator level on the fusalage. The left wing ti is three of four centimeters lower then the right one. Im afraind to glue the elevator on yet because i dont wan the plane to fly all messed up. the plane is an carl goldbeg electra. Someone please help.

RE: uneven elevator
The small discrepancy you note... is insignificant on that aircraft. it will fly just fine and you'd never notice it.
Some places its good to be a perfectionist. For that minor misalignment on that slow 2 meter powered glider... don't worry about it it'll fly fine. (amazing how badly an Electra can be messed up and it will still fly fine...) Line it up best you can and glue it.. |
RE: uneven elevator
What he said.

RE: uneven elevator
The Electra has a long fuselage. There may be a twist in the fuselage. Place the fuse on a level surface and slide a 90 degree template along each side of the fuse from front to back and see if the sides of the fuse are at 90 degrees all the way down its length.
If the fuse is OK the lay the wing and elevator in place and measure the vertical distance from the tips of each to the table. This will tell you which is off, the wing or the elevator (actually the stabilizer, the elevator is the moving part) or both. Sand the wing saddle and or the stabilizer mounting area until the wing is level and the stabilizer is level as measured from the tips to the table. |
RE: uneven elevator
Well the wing tips are egual its just that the elevatore is off a liittle. are you saur ethis is okay. Out of al the planes iv built over the years iv never had this problem.

RE: uneven elevator
Dont that come out to about an inch and a half? And if im right isnt that alot even for that palne. Just asking.
|
RE: uneven elevator
yes it does. But my question for you is it wont hurt the flying caracture ristices will it. Cuz the fuse is a little twisted.
|
RE: uneven elevator
I would make it right if it was mine, however I know from post that FHHuber is a very knowledgeable guy, and if he says it will be fine I would probably bet on it. I just thought it was a bit much off, but I'm not the pro. So like I said for me to be comfortable I would get it right. I would go with what Commander_Drake posted if you decide to fix it.

RE: uneven elevator
Ok thanks. I was just asking because im like a freakin perfectanist. It has got to perfect no matter what. i have seen some of the crap down at my field and i sometimes wonder how it got of the ground.lol
|
RE: uneven elevator
I know what you mean ;) It seems that when you know somthings not right... everything that does go wrong... you allways wonder if thats the problem and overlook the real problem.
|
RE: uneven elevator
well i just look at the plane, and i made a template. the right sde of the fuse is higher than the left so ill just sand down the right side of the saddle, hopefullly that will do it.
"perfection is the key to succes" |
RE: uneven elevator
I hope that does the trick. Let me know how it turns out.
|
RE: uneven elevator
Ill let ya now once its A-OK.

RE: uneven elevator
The minor msalignment would give a TINY amount of yaw with elevator. The angle difference of one tip of the stab being 1/4 inch low would be under 3 degress. That would give the effect of about one click of trim on the rudder at full elevator deflection. (you'd never see it on the electric glider)
If it were a Pattern or IMAC precision aerobatic aircraft... you would need it to be perfect. The Electra... I've seen fly with double the dihedral angle on one side vs the other, 1/2 inch washout on one wing, and 1/8 inch on the other... and you couldn't see the difference in flight performance from a straight one. (sure looked wierd on the ground... and had a lot of rudder trim... but it flew well.) |
RE: uneven elevator
Usually you can mix out any adverse flying characteristics of an aerobatic plane.
|
RE: uneven elevator
4 Centimeters??? Or do you mean Millimeters?
|
RE: uneven elevator
Hey flying Monkey you wanted to know if i got the stab level, well guess what it is dead freaken level now!!! I stress like hell over every thing i do wrong so like not getting the stab level was way out of the question. lol
|
RE: uneven elevator
Im glad to hear you got it streight. Hope it flies good for you. Now there is no question, and you dont have to be worried about it.
|
RE: uneven elevator
Hey MinnFlyer,
He was talking 3 to 4 Centimeters. |
RE: uneven elevator
Hey i went to the field to day to take her out on the first flight. Good damm!! flew like it was on a wire!!!

RE: uneven elevator
Perfectionists, Stubborn-People, and Un-Anger-Manageable People Rock!!
I get wicked mad when something, however minor, goes wrong, then I try foreverr without giving up on it, then I get wicked mad again, then I come here:D |
RE: uneven elevator
im like that about every thing i do. People laugh at me when i tell them it takes me two to three times longer to build a kit that usaule. But what the funny part is my planes will come ut so much better that the person that laughs at me.
|
RE: uneven elevator
Are you as much a perfectionist with your planes as your writing?
|
RE: uneven elevator
Hey! Great! Congratulations.
