Avistar Props
 

I am finishing up my Avistar now. I am using an OS 46AX engine. What would be a good prop size to start with? I have an 11x4 and a 10x7 in my box now. Would it be ok to run in the engine with the 11x4 or a 10x4? I want somthing that will keep the speed down but have a lot of thrust. Also would wood or the Master Airscrew props be better? Thanks

11x5 or 11x6 would be fine.

10x7 maybe, but not best IMO

11x4 is a small
10x4 is way small

The .46 will do OK witht he 11X4, and that's not a bad prop for the Avistar. Better would be a 11X5 or 12X4. (my preference on the Avistar would be the 11X5)

Avistar is abit faster flying model than average for a trainer... For most .40 trainers I would advice the 12X4 on the .46, but the Avistar's higher airspeed and slightly less tendancy to float on landing approach makes the 11X5 a better choice.

Ok thanks. Will that size be ok for breaking in the engine?

Yes the 11-4 or the 10-7 should be ok to break in the engine. To fly it the 11-5 or the 12-4 would do just fine. My preference would be the 12-4.

12x4 might get a little close to the ground for a beginner....

i started with an avistar end of last year. ive only got a 40la and with a 10-6 it was faster than i needed for training. use the larger diameter- smaller pitch for sure with a .46ax. ive read too many posts of avistars pulling up in a dive and folding the wings. btw the avistar is the best trainer imo because you can do quite a bit with it if you max the throws. if you have any other ? that i could help with let me know.

I think I will pick up a few 11x4's and a couple 12x4's and start with the 11's. I think I might go with wood to start with. I would rather ruin a prop than an engine or worse any day. I am hoping that the 11x4 should hover and pull it out nicely. I can get the the pt 40 to hover for several seconds on RF G2. So with a little practice I should be able to get the Avistar to do it easily enough. But I also dont want a plane that wants to cruise at 70mph to start with either. I am hoping to keep it under 60. For a little while anyway.

The Avistar has some problems doing hovers... just not made for it.

If you want to hover... IF it has the ground clearance get an APC 12.25X3.75. That prop will give you the best potential for hovering using a .46. With a O.S. .46 FX, using the APC you can drag 7.5 lbs vertical unlimited. (I haven't tried heavier... I bet it could drag a bit over 8 lbs vertical unlimited.)

Sweet. I will have my lhs order a couple. But its not what I need to start with. I might also slap on a set of 3 inche tires for just a little extra ground clearance for landing when I do.
