cleaning wood

I thought i had a hairline crack in my plane,i explained to a salesman my problem and was gonna drop some ca glue down in the crack,he advised me to clean the crack to remove the oil first and dry cleaning fluid would work,is there something else to use to remove the oil ?.
Thanks

RE: cleaning wood

The cleaning he is suggesting is assuming that model engine fuel or exhaust residue got into the crack. If its INSIDE tha covering and not exposed to the stuff... then there is no need to pre-clean it. ;)

If it has been exposed to the oil, then definitely use the dry cleaning solvent to halp get the oil out. use corn MEAL (not starch[&:] I have been misunderstood here and it makes a mess.) as the absorbant to draw the fluid and oil out.

You can also use rubbing or denatured alcohol, and apply a bit of heat (again using corn meal) Brush the alcohol on, spread the corn meal on and cover with paper towel dampened with alcohol... and then iron it. This draws a LOT of oil out, but not quite as much as dry cleaning solvent (but the solvent is toxic and expensive.)

RE: cleaning wood

At the stores my wife looked in and called today dosn't carry dry cleaning fluid,it's very high on the list for inhaling and i think it is very toxic but i'm still going to try and get some.i thought i had a crack in the wood, something that couldn't be taken apart as it wasn't at a joint but it wasn't cracked after all,it was the mono that they pieced together.
Thanks
