Tower Trainer 40
 

Does anyone have any experience with this plane? Just got one put together and it seems to be a much stronger plane than the NexStar I also have. It's also has a very sharp color scheme.

The Tower Trainer is a fine plane, and a bargain as well. It flys pretty much like any other trainer I've flown.

I learned to fly with one and still have it. With a 40LA in the nose, it's a great trainer. I just took it down from the rafters and taught a friend how to fly a couple of days ago and it still flys great.

I learned with Tower Trainer 40 with 40 LA also,

Tower Trainer is though bird, I hit the limbo pole during a fun fly and it had less damage than I expected. The same pole cut clean several other planes like Avistar wing clean the same day.

Of course speed, angle all determine the damage maybe having O.S. 40 LA heped there.

I had 30+ minute flights with Tower Trainer with a single tank, and 40 LA, it is hard to beleive.

Only the sticky covering is pain for repairing, nothing will match the color and becareful monokote does not stick easily and the trim solvent also is a solvent for the paint.
Monokte Trim sheets are handy for repairing the plane as they are thicker and have adhesive.

That's a good point. The plane is fine, but the covering is garbage.

I learned on one also. It is a fine trainer and a good bargain.

A few comments... I could never get the 40la to run properly on the Tower Trainer and had to switch to a 40FX (the same la was OK on other planes). There is no provision for padding the fuel tank (may have been the problem with the 40la). You may want to do some surgery on the nose to provide room for foam padding or use a smaller tank. You really don't need a 10 oz tank on a trainer. 6 oz would be fine.

The "shelf paper" covering does not hold up well to fuel, but is good enough for a trainer. You will need to recover in a year or two, if you want to keep it. Also, the nose gear is a sloppy fit - you may want to get a larger diameter one that fits the holes better. Otherwise ground handling can be a bit difficult.

I thought the new models have a heat shrink film? I put a OS .46 FX in mine, what kind of fly time should I expect

With 8oz tank on my 4* and 46FX I get about 9-10minutes, with 9 oz tank as specs state(Tower web site) you should get about 10-12 minutes as this is a trainer even more that is plenty of flight time.

That front landing gear will keep bending and will not go staright, if you have easy lock put it to the steering arm and pushrod at the front. this way you don;t have remove the wing and put back if you need to fix it.

As the gear bends you will break more props and with 46fx you will run a 11" prob as 10" that I ran. I broke about 10 props while learning with second and third planes I am still using the original props.

If your field is grass, get bigger tires, It helped me a lot since 40 la was not a muscle engine.
