Irvine for Trainer

Hello,

I'm getting back into flying and need a new engine for an Eagle2 (on floats) or PT-40. I have an ST GS-45 in one of them and was looking at putting an Irvine in the other. I would like to teach a couple of people to fly on these airplanes, but would like to have a nice engine for future airframes.

Which Irvine would you guys recommend? The new .39 is rated at 1.3hp and is an ounce less than the .53 which makes 1.7hp. Do you think the .53 is too much for a trainer? The .53 makes only 0.1hp more than an OS46FX, which seems to be a popular choice.

Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Richard.

I would go for the Irvine .46
I havea .53 and it has awesome power.. (don't have a 46FX so I can't compare)
But I think the .53 is way too much engine for a trainer, I would choose the .40 or beter the .46
Regards,
Patrick

You'll find out that the 46 have around 1.4 bhp and the 53 has around 1.7 bhp.

I have a .46 Irvine in my Eagle 2. I think this is a very good match. Plenty of power with a 11X6 Master prop. I just putt around at around 1/3 throttle. Nice and slow. On the other hand, the engine will yank that Eagle off the runway in less than 20 feet. And running only 5% nitro is pretty economical to boot. Anyway, I am pleased with this combination. :)

My .53 handles very well, and would make a great first engine. Very friendly!
