Sig Mid Star 40 as second plane ???
 

Quick question.....I'm very new to this hobby and in fact went up for the first time last weekend But I'm interested in having a second plane ready in the "hangar". I'm interested in building to pass the time while I'm learning to fly. I do have building experience from my control line days so it shouldn't be a problem. I've read a ton of threads on the 4* and how good it is for a second plane. What about the Mid*40 ?? I know it's a mid-wing vs. a low wing, but by looking at the pictures, it looks like it lacks the dehidral that the 4* has (I could be wrong). Has any one flown this plane and the 4* to give me a comparison? Is it a good performer compared to the 4*? I'm not opposed to the 4*, I just like the way the Mid* looks. I don't want to get ahead of myself as I am still very much a newbie, but I would like to get an early jump, plus I always enjoyed building my control line models so I know I will enjoy building RC models as well :) Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

The mid star is an excellent second plane. it has some of the characteristics of your trainer but sporty enough to expand your skills. The "traditional route" to training is high wing trainer, mid wing, then a low wing plane. My dad has an easy sport 40 from great planes and it is the same way. I say go for it and have a good time.

I have built and flown both and liked my Mid Star 40 better then the 4*40. It can be a very gentle flier when you want it to be but can hot dog with the best. I put a TT .46 Pro on it and it really scooted but landing was oh so slow!:D I sure wish I still had mine may it rest in peace, bad Rx battery was its demise![&o]

Thanks guys, I think I have made my decision :) . I will probably either put my OS 46 FXI from my NexSTAR in it, or buy an OS 46 AX, or maybe a TT when the time comes. Any of those should give it plenty of "zip" :)

After a long stop and start build, I finally finished my Midstar last Fall. It's a fun building and flying airplane. I enjoy doing Cuban's and hammer heads with it. It will hold a knife edge and snap roll real fine, although I'm a little afraid to do this, until I reinforce the tail with tri stock or bracing wires. I also enjoy practicing side slips with it. Simple stuff to some. But that's my style I guess. This plane makes it so easy.

BTW, I believe the Midstar wing dihedral is 1 degree. Not sure about the Four Star.

The Mid-Star is an excellent design by Bruce Tharpe. Like all of his ideas, this one goes together well and flies like a dream. It is a little bit touchy for the inexperienced, but forgiving and stable. I built one with training wheels and now have another to build as a tail dragger.
