Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys,

Ive been flying for well over a year now, and ive been using different kinds of spinners i now have a few planes with Aluminum Spinners, do they run better or are plastic spinners just as good ? the problem i find with plastic spinners if i flood the engine which of course i still sometimes do, epesically if its a new engine and its stiff ;-0 it churns up the plastic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

So is it worth the extra money to get an Aluminum Spinner for the other planes............... also can u mark / scrath the Aluminum Spinners with an Electiric Starter ? if so can and how to you get the marks off ?

Thx in advance for any replys :)

IMHO, aluminum spinners are expensive and if you nose over, you've ruined it! I personally stay with the plastic; they're cheap and plentiful!

I don't agree with you TNRabbit.

Aluminum spinners are great for a couple of reasons.

1) the starter does put a mark on it but it rubs off with your fingers, you won't scratch it.

2) nose overs do not ruin spinners. If anything, they are more durable than plastic.

3) they look great.

4) you can spin them with an electric starter and not gouge into the spinner like plastic.

5) the mounting studs will never break off because they don't have mounting studs, just one screw in the middle.

The downside is that they are expensive and you usually need a special adapter that costs as much as the spinner. But that is the only drawback.

They look good and are easier to use. Cost isn't a consideration. Don't nose over. I like aluminum a lot more too.

Not sure I'd announce that 5_Spot! [&:]

I prefer aluminum spinners too, but often settle for plastic because of the cost.

DragonHeart,
You should be real careful about hitting the engine with a starter if it's fuel locked. You might end up replacing the engine's guts instead of just the spinner!

And where does one order a glow in the dark spinner? Seriously - I want one :D

I think that you will save yourself a lot of grief going with aluminum spinners. I just bought one from tru turn. If you have to keep replacing plastic spinners, you will spend the same amount you would have for the aluminum before too long anyway.

I dont know about you, but I'm afraid to fly in the dark:)

Well, since UFO's are back in the news i decided i better get something that glows in the dark just in case i run into them,i think the "lime green" should scare them off. :)

The guy wants to know what size, brand engine your planning on putting this on.

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

The guy lied to me [X(] ,now he says all he does is paint them with a glo paint, makes a killing on them.He told me i could make my own,or ours if you still want one,go to a hobby shop and get the glow in the dark spray paint, three coats thin coats are better than one thick one,and if you really want to razzle/dazzle it up,put some silver metal flake, not too much tho on top of the last coat, let it dry for a day. Before use,put it under a bright light, then it will glo for a hour or so and the flake makes it shine brighter.
*What i plan on doing is put the spinner in a drill and turn it on so the paint spreads a even coat, after final coat and metal sprinkles i'm gonna spray clearcoat over it*
Then i'm gonna get two of those air whistles, one for each wing.
* i have no idea where i get those brilliant ideas* :D

Anybody that would fly with a Lime Green spinner must be crazy. [8D]

Personally I like a big black plastic spinner with white gouges from my starter.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Or exposed threads and no spinner.

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

If it were a "true black" spinner,it wouldn't have white on it. :D j/k

I like to use spinner nuts. I don't bother with spinners unless it is a scale plane, in that case I would use aluminum spinners.

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone help me to find a reasonably priced 6" aluminium (or carbon) spinner to suit a Pica 1/5th scale P-40 I'm about to build? They have a unique shape, not at all like a P-51 (for which there are plenty of spinners).

Many thanks, in anticipation.

I'm with davidinmi, Gouging the spinner with the electric starter is like a new baby cutting it's teeth... First sign of maturity :D

teekay, Here's one... Item DAV7260:

Actually, I don't understand people screwing up plastic spinners with their starters. I have some of my original (going on 9 years old) plastic spinners, and they still look fine. No gouges, no marks.

Its from newbies cranking on flooded engines. The engine stops, so they push harder on the starter and gouge the spinner.

That's what I thought initially, but I hear a lot of intermediate pilots saying they ruin them too. [sm=confused.gif]

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm,
Lets see. Ya take that tight new engine that you ran a tank of fuel thru the night before out on a 15 degree day. Ya fire it up and you taxi the plane out for take off. You slowly advance the throttle for take off and the engine sputters and dies. You grab the starter with the cold battery pack attached and walk out to the plane. You spin the prop over a few times to make sure it turns freely, lean the engine a little, put the glow starter on and put the starter to the spinner. The engine turns one turn and the starter does not have the oomph to turn the new motor through compression. What do you do?
1) Cary the plane back to the flight box with the bigger starter.
2) Pull the starter away from the spinner. Get it spinning so it has a running start. Start the engine and add stripes to the cheap plastic spinner.

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

And don't forget,
3) Carry the glow starter in your back pocket ,quickly insert in in the proper place then spin the prop with,
1) finger or,
2) with a chicken stick,

*what's a chicken stick*

RE: Aluminum Spinners !!!!!!!!!!

What sold me on Aluminum was I had a plastic spinner on a Saito .72, FIRST time I tried to start it, it kicked back and broke all four screw posts on the spinner. I then got a tru-turn and haven't had on problem since.
