New Plane

I just got my nexstar, and i am ready to get going.... I have been out to the field, talked to a few guys and they would love to help... Bad thing is, is that someone also had a nexstar until he flew it into another guy at the field this weekend... OUCH! I guess the plane got behind him. But I have a question, if you guys wouldn't mind helping.
1. I am breaking in my engine. Its a O.S. 46 fx . starts right up after priming it by turning the prop. (using a dummy stick) and while the plane is running, its blowing gas out the muffler... all over the side of the plane. Is that normal? Is it to rich? Just seems like a mess, and a lot of trouble.

I guess thats it for now, any help would be great...

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Glow Fuel!!!:D

The mess on the plane is normal; part of the process!

And it's called a Chicken Stick, a dummy stick is what's left of your finger when you get it caught in a prop....

Thanks guys, i was a little nervous, thought i had a busted muffler or something... Sure does make the plane look like crap though. Hum, wish it was a little cleaner, but what does it really matter when its in the air right?

till i have more questions..
thanks again

A little rubbing alcohol and a paper towel will have your plane clean as a whistle in a few minutes.

They do get slimy with glow fuel. I think it looks pretty good since it means somebody was flying the plane.

A guy got hit by a prop today at the field by a 13" prop on a Saito 82. Cut across the knuckle and barely missed a ligament. Not too many stitches.

I take Windex and a roll of paper towels to the field with me. I always clean up the "muffler slop" after the flying day is done. If you fly off of a grass field , wait until all the grass clippings are decoration your plane! Mine actually flies better with the grass clippings! :)

Also this way it dosen't drip in your car!

Have fun!!

Just wait until you actually start flying. It's going to have much more than just oil on the plane.

Once the addiction has really set in, get yourself a 4-stroke engine. They sound great, use less fuel, and spray a helluvalot LESS gunk all over your plane!

MinnFlyer: I have a YS 91 AC and it blows just as much oil as any 2 stroke engine I've ever had....

SaintCallaway: FYI, this is an excellent thread for engine break-in:

Your OS .46FXI was factory broke in just run the first few tanks of gas at mild throttle. I am on my second plane with that motor and runs great!

i asked my instructer this ? the other day at the flying field. he said the closer the color of the gunk on the plane is to the the color of the un-used fuel, the richer the engine is. for me, the color of my fuel is red. the first flight up, and it came back with practicly red gunk on the side. we leaned it out a little, and then it came out orange. hope this helps.

RE: New Plane

Yeah get used to the gunk,,there are exhaust deflectors so that most of the gunk will go under the plane and if you dont mind loosing a little power some people have used different types of line (such as automotive fuel line) to route the exhaust right out of the back of the plane..Rog
