1/5 scale Cub, full or clipped wing?

I am building the Sig 1/5 Cub. My dilemma is which wing configuration to build. I REALLY like the full wingspan version (7ft wingspan would be awesome). But I have heard mention that the clipped wing is a better overall flier, mainly due to better power/weight ratio. My thinking has been to go with the full length wing and later order another to build as the clipped wing version.

This is my first build, and will be my "second" aircraft. I am a "middle aged" person, not interested in speed or aerobatics, just wanting some fun and realism in my flying. I intend to keep my flying relaxing and enjoyable, not intense and knee shaking!

Any opinions?

RE: 1/5 scale Cub, full or clipped wing?

I built my SIG 1/5 scale Cub with the full wing- I have never actually seen a clipped-wing full size Cub, and I wanted mine to be realistically modeled after the one I rode in when I was 5 yrs old. It flies great. Nice and slow and graceful. If you want a faster roll rate and less glide, build it clipped. I have never even rolled mine with the full wing, as I tend to fly it in more of a scale manner the way *MOST* Cubs were flown. Sure, some people did some light aerobatics in Cubs, but not where I grew up. Stall turns were the most exciting thing done in the light planes I grew up flying in. Enjoy.

Build it with the full wing. I saw a clipped/full wing comparison and the full wing flew much more gracefully.

You should build it either clipped or full length and then order JUST the wing from Sig and construct the other configuration. That way you can swap wings and fly whichever one suits you that day. This way you don't have to buy and build a whole other plane. That may have been what you said in your email but I read as if you would build a whole plane and do it clipped. Sorry, if I just repeated what you said. I assume this can be done. I know it can be done for most of Sig kits so I just assume that the Cub is no different.

If it's realism you want, go with the full wing. But if you want something fun, clip the wing.

Contrary to popular belief, the clipped wing doesn't make for a "Hotter" cub necessarily. With the CG right, a clipped wing cub will still float like a dream. The reason for the BIG wing on the original was that it was designed to fly on a tiny engine. It would be similar to putting a .30 engine on a Cub that is designed for a .46. They NEEDED that big wing to get off the ground.

The Only problem is that a wing that big creates a lot of adverse yaw. In a FS Cub that's not a problem since you coordinate your turns anyway. But on a model, it means you will either have to coordinate your turns, or get used to watching it slip sideways during a turn (Losing altitude as it does).

Personally, I like the way a clipped wing flies better than a full wing - Even on those days when I just want to putz around the sky. But if you don't mind having to swing that big wing through turns just for the sake of looks, have at it.

PS, there's always a compromise... You can clip half the amount they tell you to.

I've built and flown the great planes 40 size cub with both the full length wing and the clipped wing. Although the full length wing is great, the plane flew better with the clipped wing. With the full wing, I was always worried about rolling it. Took a long time to do, and with such a long wing, you just might touch the ground as you hit knife edge!
