2nd Airplane
I was wondering if you guys could give me some input on a good 2nd Airplane. I currently have a Hangar 9 Arrow Trainer and I am considering transitioning to a low wing sport/aerobatic plane. What suggestions do you have? I am thinking about the Venu 40 from Great Planes. Any input would be appreciated. THanks.

It really depends on your skill level but a T-34 is a great second plane for most people. A piper cherokee or a piper cub

40 size Goldberg Tiger 2 kit or arf. Easy and forgiving to fly but plenty of aerobatic capability. Needs a 40 or 46 ball bearing engine or maybe a 46 bushed engine.

But another thing to think about is that everybody crashes, especially pilots that have only flied solo a few times. Then if you crash and you buy, lets say venus 40, you have a very complicated plane to repair, but if you choose a profile or something similar, then it's much easier to repair...

Thanks guys.... But remember I was in this hobby before. I'm not a newb. I have built a few planes from kits years ago. I'm not going into it right away. Just researching my options. My first flight with my Arrow was solo, with my best friend (an established r/c pilot) next to me with our transmitters linked. I flew before, so it's just a matter of getting reaquainted again. I appreciate your suggestions though. Any other suggestions are welcomed.

I think you could try any of the CG tigers. A friend of mine bought a 60 sized with a .91 fourstroke and it's VERY easy to fly..... I could fly it before I even soloed! Also it will do basic aerobatics such as loops and VERY slow rolls...Or faster rolls if you prefer. Also with a master airscrew 14x6 prop it has nearly unlimited vertical and will hover for 2-5 seconds. Knife edge flight is OK but not great. It lands inclredibly slow <with out flaperons> and in a slight breeze down the runway it's fun to harrier all the way down to landing or a tough and go....

I'll agree with the Goldberg Tiger 2, 40 or 60 size. They fly well, penetrate wind better than many, and are really pretty stable and capable of decent aerobatics.
Other options would be the Great Planes Super Sportster (my second and a good flyer), the Sig Four Star 40 or 60 (called 4* on RCU ;)), some have gone with the Sig Somethin' Extra with the control throws turned down. The last is a good option if you eventually want to get into 3D. I've flown all but the Extra, and can vouch for each of them. There are a number of others that would likely make a good second, including one of the "Sticks", but these are the ones recommended most often. Good luck, have fun, and welcome to RCU! Dennis- |

Has anyone heard of the VMAR Arrow Tiger Sport? I read a review in RCU about the VMAR Hornet Trainer. Was just wondering about the overall quality of the plane and it's flying characteristics. Any input is appreciated.

Generally speaking, VMAR has a pretty bad reputation. Try a search on VMAR and see what results you get.

Any of the Sig 4* planes (40/60/120) is an excellent 2nd plane.

I'm trying to find a second plane too. I had a dazzler a while ago and it was aweosme, crashed it on the 3rd flight because i was being stupid. Would the GP Ultra Sport be ok? I want something that i can depend on but that will also be cool to have in the future.

Sig 4*40 or 60 if you want to start out slow. I went from my trainer to the Great Planes Super Sportster. I really loved that plane (RIP).
