Talking about fields
Our strip is grass, about 80 metres long and 5 metres wide with 1 metre high stone walls at either end which have jumped up and grabbed several aircraft. But it is well kept and mowed frequently by our club members. what are your fields and strips like?

RE: Talking about fields
runway or an acre or 2 of landing pad? :D

RE: Talking about fields
We alternate between two fields. On one of them the farmer is growing his second crop of silage. It is interesting trying to fly while waist deep in grass :) Also we do not have cross shaped runways - we have just the one. Side winds therefore are also interesting. I am not going to read this thread. I will just end up jealous of our American friends :D

Here's a couple pics I posted in some other threads of our field.
No wisecracks about the crashed 4*! That's the only shot I had handy straight down the runway. |
RE: Talking about fields
Our runway is located in the middle of a corn field. It is about 700 feet long and 200 feet wide (about 645 meters wide and 184 meters wide). On one side of the length of the field is the pit area, on the other side is a soccer field about the same size. A dirt road is on one end and corn on the other end. Except for the pit area, the nearest tree or other obstruction is 1/4 mile away.
We frequently fly giant scale off the field and have also had several ultralight planes land on the field. The last ultralight was a 2 passenger parachute type. I must say though, that your runway does "instill accurate landings and somewhat steep climbouts". :D |

Here's our field. 80 acres of farmland. The loop is our driveway, the dark grey rectangle is our runway surrounded by tall grass. The light grey all around is plowed up ground.
Sorry for you Brits. Kerry |
RE: Talking about fields
Our club sec boast "if you can fly off our strip you can fly off any" though even he has put a plane in the wall once or twice. Oh and please excuse the metres thing, it's about a yard and three inches.

RE: Talking about fields
we lease from a guy who owns a full scale runway(private), so we have a grass strip northwest/southeast thats about 1/4 mi long x 100ft wide, we also just put in a runway east/west thats 300ftx80ft. every other yaer the farmer around our field plants corn, so the runway is in a vally of corn 10 ft deep for a few months, makes it interesting when youve got a crosswind that suddenly vanishes 10 ft off the ground. oh, and nothing to hit but the hanger for the cessna and the occasional train for about 1 mile, well a few trees, but they are a long ways off too

PennyMan,
I hope you appreciate that you made TyBryner crash his 4*, just so you'd have a picture of the view down his runway! (Can I have the wheels and landing gear?) |
RE: Talking about fields
lol
Iv'e goto agree with photoniq on this one, being in the UK were very very limited, i mean Miniflyer that field it like 1000 times longer than what i have to takeoff and land in lol....... I guess it does make you a bit more skillful, try landing a 120 powered warbird which needs to land a bit hot in a patch about the size of 3 houses in lenght and you cant over run otherwise you will hit large crops which would tear your plane into bits also whilst doing all this avoid the heard of cows which the farmer wants to stick in thier as targets [X(] Photoniq is right makes us jelous, you guys are lucky :) |

Well here is a pic of our field in Brampton, ON. Canada.
Those trees at the top of the picture are really in a valley. They have swallowed hundreds of planes. Some people have NEVER seen their plane when it goes in there. It's so thick with trees, your lucky if the plane will hit the ground. |
