Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
I flew a few times in my teen years... anyways I am back in the hobby with much more money and a tendency to buy things to fast and not plan it out.... LOL
I have not even flown yet but have 6 planes and 6 engines Hobbico Superstar 40 Megatech Nitro Trainer http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1 that plane looks to be a home built 3D GILES-202 ARF NIB 1/12 Scale House of Balsa ME 109E Kyosho Corsair ARF what order would I fly these planes ? trainer to advanced of course lol the superstar 40 need the rear wing rebuilt and the main repaired 3 balsa (spars I think they are called) have top be replaced and then the rear and main wing must be recovered... the Megatech and Giles are NEW ARF's so non built yet the ME 109E is a KIT total build needed Kyosho is a ARF also but cost the most so i want to be sure not to crash it The E bay linked plane is ready to go i guess :D I have for engines Norvel .010 Norvel .061 O.S. .25 LA O.S. .40 Max FP O.S. .46 Max FX K&B .61 also 3 transmitter and flight packs Futaba FP-7UAF new in box Futaba Conquest FP-T6NFK used with a FP-R127DF 7 channel reciever and 4 s 148's Futaba Conquest FP-T4NBF used with a Hitech 555 receiver and 3 HS-81's and 1 HS-60 Just to restate what is the first to last plane you would progress through the ranks with ? and maybe suggest engines setup on each also any tips on each plane would be nice to know for quirks ect.... thanks for reading and I hope to hang here for a long time... I am serious about getting back into this hobby again |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
First, find a local club and an instrucotr to get you up. It will likely allow you to keep all those planes in one piece, for awhile at least. ;)
Here's a link to the AMA's website. They have a club locater page where you can plug in your Zip code and get a list of local clubs. http://www.modelaircraft.org/templat...677786D06500E8 I'd advize that you start with the Megatech trainer. It's possibly the worst of the planes you bought (do a search for Megatech here), so it won't hurt so much IF it crashes. Save the Kyosho Corsair and the Giles until you've flown at least a couple of other planes, AND learned to fly them well. Good luck, have fun, and welcome to RCU! Dennis- |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
I would start with the Superstar 40 and put the OS 46 in it. The Superstar is a good trainer (don't waste time with the Megajunk, maybe you can sell it) and with the OS 46 in it you will have some power for basic aerobatics when your thumbs are sufficiently knowledgeable.
Welcome back to the addiction. |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
Take the advice given by DBCherry
Start with the trainer(s) the rest of the order doesn't matter and all you are going to get is a bunch of guesses!!! After you have mastered one you can base your choice of the next plane on something tangible namely your skills to date. Each person learns at a different pace so the is no absolute rule on the progression of planes used during the learning process. Who knows you might be ready for the corsair as plane two then again you might not be ready for it untill plane 4-5.:D Each model will teach you something different and you may find that you prefer one type over another all will be enjoyable |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
I agree with Dennis's first admonition to find a club and instructor. Buddy box technology has really improved the learning curve since the "grab for the box" days of instruction. Since you've got 3 Futaba Transmitters, get a buddy cord of your own and you'll be ready to go without scrounging around at the field for a cord/Tx loan. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXH466&P=7
I don't know anything about the Megatech trainer; is it a 4 ch, aileron plane? If not, start with the SuperStar (which I am familiar with and incidentally, I believe you can get a replacement wing for). The SuperStar is a stable flyer, somewhat of a floater, that will give you some reaction time to correct mistakes. Put the OS .46 on it with a Master Airscrew 11x6 prop (it's tougher than most others) and you have a great combination. The OS .46FX is a powerful and user friendly engine that will let you spend time flying and not tinkering with the engine. I'm not sure I'd pick my first plane by deciding which one's the worst. With a buddy box and instructor, a good trainer plane has a good chance of lasting a season, so use the plane that will keep you flying and learning the most. All your Tx and Rx are suitable for the planes you have, except maybe the 1/12 109 which may require the Hitec 555 Rx, due to size restrictions. However the 555 is a great, full range, rx and will work fine in any of those planes. The Hitec 81 servoes are minis and the 60s are micros and not suitable for use in any of the planes except the 81s in the 109. Also, how old are your batteries? If they've been sitting around for a couple of years or more, I'd pitch them and get new replacements. A lot cheaper than a bad battery caused crash. Have any of the Rx been in a crash? If so, send them back to the manufacturer for a check up. Finally, quit buying stuff before you need it !!! By the time you get around to using it, it's not the latest and greatest. Do you want to collect R/C stuff, or fly R/C? Fly the wings off those trainers and get comfortable with them, then get a low wing trainer like a Kaos and wear it out. Then maybe you'll be ready for a Giles of Me109. |

I am not allowed to buy any more planes till I crash one :( |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
I am not allowed to buy any more planes till I crash one I've been at this for about 9 years now, and I might as well have a hobby shop. More stuff (and money tied up) than I care to think about. But it's an addiction and I LIKE it. :D Dennis- |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
Db is right, I would use the Megatech one with the FP in it. I would use the 6 channel radio in it. I would have someone at the field you go to to go over it. I would fix the Hobbico plane and put the Super 7 in it (a fantastic radio BTW. Good basic computer unit). I would use the FX to power it. After that it is your call. I would suggest getting either a 4* or a Tiger II as a second plane with the FX in it. Good luck with the hobby.

RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
And I'd agree with Mark regarding the 4* (Four Star) or the Tiger 2 as a second plane, and with using the FX in it.
Good luck, Dennis- |
RE: Old guy coming back to the hobby :D
ok gota get some practice in and crash on *shudders* before I can get another.
