A glow airplane is a gas powered airplane, but it runs on a special type of fuel called glow fuel. This fuel is a mixture of oil and nitromethane and oil. A trainer airplane is a must for any beginner pilot. If you are not into building, then you can purchase the RTF(ready to fly) Superstar .40 from Hobbico which comes with almost everything that you need to begin flying with. The plane that I started with was the ARF(almost ready to fly) solo series from Hangar 9. There are many good trainer planes out there, so just look through Tower Hobbies and you will find many more. One last recommendation is to join a club so they can teach you how to fly so you will not have to risk losing it.

Glow vs Gas ??

A "glow" engine uses a "glow plug" and hence the name. The fuel used is a mixture of alcohol and lubricant plus nitromethane. The fuel comes in different percentages which referes to the amount of nitromethane in the mix. 10% fuel would contain that much nitromethane and the balance of alcohol and oil.

A "gas" engine referes to actual gasoline being used. Most examples are 2 stroke types and need oil mixed with the gas (such as used in a weed whacker). Most "gas" engined are of larger displacement and used in larger models.

Sizes of the above are another point of confusion:
A 120 glow engine requirement means an engine with 1.2 cubic inch displacement.
A 120 gas engine requirement means an engine with 120cc displacement or approximately 7.32 cubic inches (10 cc = 0.61ci)

Electrics are cleaner, lighter, easier to use. Glows can be more powerful, able to swing larger props. These are just a few that I could think of but I am sure many other people have some more out there that they could share.
