Model flying schools ????????
 

Hi,
I was wondering if you or any of your members know of a model flying school in the central Florida area who provide tuition at a reasonable cost ?
I would be grateful for any links , phone numbers etc, you could provide.

hey Andybliss,

I think there are too many clubs here that will teach for free.... not only fight basics ...but right into 3d stuff. Might not be a structured learning process but you know the saying "if it's free its for me" :D

It wouldn't be the sort of thing that everyone would go for i realise, but if someone were having problems getting the attention they needed from a club that would teach them for free they may be tempted to "buy" some one on one tuition ?

there are 2 of these i know of one is here in shawno wisconsin and the other i have seen adds for is in california, i know the one here in wisconsin says 1 week to solo garauntee the other im not sure about.

the shawno one charges a set fee for the week i think ? maybe someone can remember the name of it ? and you could give them a call and get some info to help figure out what is needed for such buisness.

I think $60 per hour is a little steep. I would liken it to a hobby shop where you wouldn't be in it to make a lot of money, you would just do it for fun. $60 bucks an hour would be right up there with full scale airplanes.
I have seen ads for the Colanades r/c community, if you could set up something there where you are the resident instructor that might work. But you are only looking at a few hours per person. An hour of actual flying is a lot considering a single flight only lasts about 10 minutes. And after 6 flights or so, a lot of folks could solo by then.

Additionally, it would only be feasable for someone in the immediate area (50 miles or so). So why would people go to the "Flight School" from, for instance Ohio, and spend a week with motel and food just to learn to fly when they can do it in their area for free.

Don't get me wrong, I think it might work but there are a lot of things to consider.

But you have to remember, the people getting into the hobby/sport dont relize that they could get it for free, and they would be really pissed when they did

When we have a begginer ask about tuition in the shop, we first tell them that the local club will offer tuition for free, however, if they wish to make appointments and learn from an instructor at a time suitable to them then they might try one of the schools,
You would be surprised at the amount of people that prefer to pay and control their time,
From a salesmans point of veiw if the customer knew he could get the sevices offered for free and still decide to pay for them, then the sale is well and truly closed !

I'm not really sure, But I believe they are called RC Clubs.. You can get
all the training and info from most if not all of them. Not to mention having
a fun and safe place to fly along with other info... Just a thought..

i have been doing the tuition at club level for nearly 30 years ron and yes, they have a very important part to play in keeping our hobby safe, but if most of us are honest, we really dont want to teach, it's somthing we do because we have to ?

Yeah Andy I guess I can see your point.. I've read a few post on this.
I guess my club is different.. And maybe unlike others, But I can get
all the help I need with only one fee.. And that's not just with the
trainer that is teaching you, But others at the field..
Guess the more I read about this type of subject, I feel very lucky
to have the Club and members that I have met here!! And maybe
take it for granted all clubs are alike..

I personally attended the 1st US RC Flight School in Shawano Wisconsin last September. It is run by a gentleman named Dave Scott. He has been at it for 15+ years and has trained over 1000 paying students. I did the club instruction thing for one summer and went to Dave's school last fall. Club instruction can be and often is very good. The one drawback can be a longer time to go solo, meeting with the club instructor regularly, having to have different instructors etc. For many who want to fly but don't necessarily have the time/flexibilty to meet with an instructor regularly to develop the skills a school is excellent. Dave offered concentrated flying lessons that result in you being comfortable as a solo flyer in 5 days. (It worked better than club instruction for me at least!) He is a very effective instructor and has developed a system that works and has published it in a series of books. Any club instructor would benefit from picking up Dave's techniques and any person who attends Dave's school gets what they pay for ($600 for 5 days) and then some back in savings as a result of not crashing multiple planes as a part of the learning process. I am all for structured instruction and a proven technique to teach r/c flying (like Dave's) and think it benefits us all by generating safe responsible flyers that are less likely to become discouraged by crashes and leave the hobby! Just my two cents worth!

A person would have to treat it like a vacation. Pay for tuition, motel, food, and travel. If that's what they want to do with their vacation buying dollar, great. But I for one have a family who would frown on me taking a vacation to learn to fly r/c. Obviously there is a small demand for it but after you add up all the cost, I'd rather buy a big gas plane and spend a month learning for free.

Just my opinion. I'm not saying it is good or bad, it just wouldn't have worked for me.

Just go to a local club and get it for free. Thats the way it should be. And 60$/hr??? Wow! I wish I got paid that instructing in full sized planes!:D

There is a school in Keystone heights florida. East of Waldo and south of starke.

Don't know what they charge. If you find out let me know - I'm interested also. Ph. # is 877-540-8536 . They teach jets, helicoptors and airplanes. Understand you problems with learning. at a club, a single flight takes maybe one hour and depending how many students are waiting, may take all day for your one flight. I would rather pay someone that takes me to the take off and landing level and then go to the club and really practice a lot.

Also found a school in Georga and north carolina. L<>et me knopw what you find out I'm interested also. May have to go back for a hovering lesson on helicoptors. I live in Hudson and the closest helicoptor pilots are in Tampa.
