Sig 4*40 vs 4*60
The Sig 4*40 has been recommended to me as a good second plane. However the wingspan size is not much diiferent than my Kadet MK II trainer. There is usually a slight wind where a fly and the wind really affects my trainer on takeoff. (Wind is usually at an angle to the runway) Would going to the 60 size version with the bigger wing be just as good or more stable?

RE: Sig 4*40 vs 4*60
In almost all cases, bigger flies better. I built a 4*60 for my son last year and in my 25+ years of modelling, it was one of the nicest flying planes I've ever flown. The .60 size will be a little more stable than the smaller one. However, I'm sure you'd be happy with either. If you're going to get a new engine, you may as well get the larger 4*. A good .91 4 stroke is perfect for it.

I just maiden my 4*60w Mag 91 4s..., After a "DUMB" close call( I had
aileron servo reversed:-( and I checked it at least 100 times) luckily I missed the wind sock pole and fence as she did a knife edge just after lift-off.. ( that's where the 91 4s helped, right off the bat:)) took her high with ail. stick movements in the opposite direction of where I wanted it to go and then switched my radio.. After that trim was pretty much right on, I did need one click on down and two rt ail. And she flew really nice, quite docile though even with hi rates and loads of power with the 4s.. And the landings are easy and ever so nice and smooth.. But.... I like it, but I think I would like a 3D plane better.. But it's a Great second plane to continue your learning! Oh one more thing.. Not sure if it was just the day light or not, But I have the Red ARF model.. And let me tell you, It can get "HARD to SEE" at times.. And I thought it would stand out with no problems.. |
RE: Sig 4*40 vs 4*60
I have the Red one as well in the 60 size with an OS91surpass on it. It is very stable in windy conditions and is a blast to fly. To make mine more visible and to distinguish the top fromt the bottom, I used the windex method and put 3 wid yellow stripes on the bottom of the wing. This really helped me determine the attitude of the plane while flying.

I have a Four*40 and it is a bit squirrelly in the wind. Not as bad as my trainer though.

I built the kit 4* 60 with the mag 91FS also it is a dream to fly ... it is one of the most enjoyable planes I have flown!

RE: Sig 4*40 vs 4*60
I am done building my Four Star 60, also with a newly broken in Magnum .91 FS. I chose the 60 due to its size. I covered the top of the wing in Ultracote transparent red, the bottom of the wing in Ultracote trans white. Looking at the bottom of the wing it does look white, but looking at the bottom with the wing overhead, and light coming through it, the red really comes through, making the bottom look pinkish. Rats. Should've known. :) Now I won't be able to make a really cool 3D-styled flag on the bottom like I had planned. I guess it'll still work. If not, I'll chalk it up to learning. I can't decide how to finish the covering of the fuse and tail. I have trans red, white, and blue. I was thinking the bottom of the entire fuse in trans white, with the bottom of the stab white, too. Front sides and top of fuse blue, and from the cockpit back to the fin trans red. I have to get the red, white and blue theme in there somehow and make it look good at the same time!

Boy it sure looks like 4* & Magnums lately. The 60 size would be a better flier. I have one in my stash to do someday.

If you don't already have an engine try the Thunder Tiger 91 4 stroke. It runs a little stronger than the magnum. It will pull the same prop at the same rpm as a Saito 100. I have a Magnum 91 and the TT 91 and both are great engines. I have flown them both on my 4*60. I also have a 4* with a GMS 76 on it also. This engine pulls the plane vertical better than the 4 stroke engines and it is faster. I like the 4 stroke engines better because they sound so cool and they run flawlessly. The power is almost as good as the GMS engine but the vertical is not as good. A strong 91 4 stroke will pull the plane vertical really good though. Here are some pictures of my two 4*'s.

I just lost my Four*40 today. I did a snap roll and the tail broke off. I am not very happy at the moment. [:@]
